Padlock got you locked out

Now, does that same process work on a lock that takes a key?

There is a spring loaded catch inside each lock whether it's combination or keyed. This is why when you close the lock it catches in the locked position. When you put a key in or give it the right combination it momentarily moves the catch so the bolt can be pulled out or opened. What they did in the video is make a tool to push the catch out of the way and allow the bolt to open. Sort of like using a credit card to open a door on a house. Not that I would admit to having ever done such a thing.:D And I'm sure there are some locks out there that are sophisticated enough to defeat the tool.
Here is an xray of a keyed padlock. You can see where the catch engages the notch in the bolt.
