Hey all you wrench heads, mad modders and engineers..... I have a question:

Much has been bandied about regarding engine damage resulting from forced induction. Of course, this is particularly important to those of us who are trying to remain on the safe side but still love having more ponies.

The concensus, as I see it, is that as long as you remain within the conservative specs for boost (7lbs), or keep your hp at or below 600 at the tire yer OK.

Judging from the vast experience that this great group has gained over the last coupl'a years. Do those numbers still stand up to the test of time? Or is it your opinion that all forms of forced induction are potentially damaging to our fragile engines?

I have personally kept my 595 rwhp exactly where it is in order to be as conservative as possible. Am I right in so doing, or is their still a risk of damage with what I have now...?:dontknow:

I'd love the opinions of qualified members.

NOT TRUE! And this is coming from a guy that blew his motor. IT IS ALL IN THE TUNE! I have FULL confidence that Chris Jensen can tune you safely to 700 rwhp with a Paxton that WILL LAST.

With no mods to the engines interior parts?

I'm sure Nowwhat can comment on this..... he's most likely kissing 700rwhp right now with no internal mods and he runs it quite a bit.

I've put on about 10 miles since my truck has been returned (not a whole lot of places to drive around here).

I cant emphasize enough that the tune is EVERYTHING when you start adding more power and stress on the truck and all its parts. I'm realizing that this is where the reputable tuners get the prices they get when building these monsters. Anyone can throw a supercharger or twin turbos on a truck but how many can tune the vehicle properly and get the most out of it reliably? Not many.

SD....you are doing the right thing....

The paxton increases pressure which by its nature is hard on the engine...at your hp and as long as you have NO PINGING.......you should expect the motor to run safely for longer than we will own these trucks....

At 700 rwhp things are going to give.......It may not be the motor but it will be the tranny, the rear end, the drive shaft...something....

I knew I could depend on ya bro.....

Thanks alot for everyone's input....

It's all in the tune. Hind sight being 20/20, I'd be all over the DC Performace tune.

My first engine had the similar specs to yours but I lost it when it went into closed loop on a mountain road. I don't know if the Paxton set-ups address this or not because most of you drive on relatively flat surfaces but don't let the engine bog down too long on a steep pull. The factory PCM senses throttle position to determine whether to add or delete fuel. In my case, the PCM sensed a low throttle so it pulled out fuel but the turbo was adding some boost due to the pull on the upgrade. Kaboom!!!! The PCM can be altered to use manifold pressure instead of throttle position or, simply, downshift to 5th for the climb.

one of our installs is Scrambler1 who has OVER 15,000 miles on his X-Metal Paxton producing over 630hp. its a dailey driver that sits in Atlanta traffic, etc.

Correct, I believe (and boomer / DC can correct me), the factory Paxton tune sets there A timing records to RPM, NOT manifold pressure / vacuum. The reson they do that if for a 'extra' safe tune, and to keep it on the rich side...

Aint that the POT callin the kettle BLACK! Mike, let him drive your truck ONCE! Then lemme see if he's doing the right thing!:) :;......If u wanna go fast, its gonna cost u....BUT I stick by my comment...if u want 650-700 SAFE...go to DC with your checkbook. YES, you will break your tranny, cuz they are INADEQUATE!!! I would do the tranny ANYWAYS! THEY SUCK! DC (Daimler Chrysler NOt Dc Perf)used an off their old ass shelf tranny from a diesel and RIGGED it to work.....I bet they would change it if they had it to do over again! Other than that....I wouldnt worry...how many rear ends have we had go...Not many. AND MIKE beats the shit out of his truck....How many 1/4 mile runs has that thingb been thru????300???

Blake,

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Dan and the boys at DC ARE my tuners. At the last dyno, Dan told me that my truck makes more HP than any other "Paxton only" truck he's tested. Chris and Dan agreed that they thought I was fine in the tune dept and that they wouldn't change anything unless I wanted to do more mods.

I'm more interested in the longevity of my truck than I am in squeezing out a few more ponies....

The info has been great y'all...... I believe I'm staying where I am for now.....:D

Gotta split for a wedding rehearsal this morning...I am the best man...... go figure.....

Later,

Im just sayin Buddy, that IF you want more....I think your OK to bump it a little if U want. Patrick is running safe at 650.....he doesnt have anything but a Paxton....Right Red.??

Correct, just the Paxton. All the other mods arnt 'motor/hp' related except for the exhaust. I think 700 is probably the max we can go without seeing issues, and 650 is SAFE MAX (if there is such a thing :p )

When the motor gets cracked open to put the heads on (thanks to crazy Blake), might as well put pistons, rods, and a cam to strengthen it up a little bit. With that combo, I can see the HP increase a lot and still have the 'motor' strength there.....but in time, you WILL find the weakest link.

I wouldn't trust anyone else on the west-coast but DC (as of right now, unless more tuners come-around)
