I thought I would pass this on. If it's important enough for the county to be worried about it, might be something to it.
I received a telephone call this morning from one of our bank contacts who advised that a new scam is circulating via email. If you could warn fiscal officers (and others?) it might save us some grief.
The scam starts with an email apparently coming from a bank or credit card processor (“bankcard servicesâ€, or “merchant services†or something similar) related to “PCI compliance†or “possible security violationâ€, etc. The email directs the recipient to log onto a web site for confirmation of their credit card security compliance. Of course, when you go to the site, you will learn that you are not in compliance with PCI standards and need to immediately accept PCI data security software from the servicer.
Since many county agencies and locations accept credit cards in settlement of county charges, we do need to be aware of the PCI (“Payment Card Industryâ€) compliance guidelines, but should not be ordering either hardware or software to accomplish that goal.
