In California you need to get a SB-100 smog exemption. That's the only issue I'm aware of.
so i understand that's only a question of emmision tests ? :dontknow: ofcourse some engines / exhausts could be a problem.....
In Belgium they are "hard" working against all "old" cars.... you know, that's NOT a joke : we need the VIN number stamped in the chassis .... which is not always the case in US cars.... with legaly imported cars you may need to go to the official dealer , let it stamp AND have a official paper.....

( that VIN number in front of the windshield as on many US cars doesn't count here !

)
Well now me : i bought from the BELGIAN army my Willys '52 WITH official army papers ... had to go tech inspection for my O license plates.... hahhahhaa, they couldn't find the stamped VIN number... neither could i...
so back home ... happily after rubbing some 20

layers of coat on a front beam ... i found it and could pass inspection....
Also possible : IF they believe your cars build year , they can go searching for the original tire dimensions, brakes, engine etc... when that doens't match you are screwed !

so you have already a scary moment when your car has disc brakes and the originals at the time drums.... :toilet:
My '82 Porsche 928 was first disqualified because it had tires wider then the original ....still running inside the original fenders without rubbing !!! It had new tires on new Porsche wheels... from a 928 younger model... the former owner had it that way pass tech inspection... that's the problem : they can always find something new.... something to bitch about , neither can you prove it had good tech inspection THAT way , neither do they accept responsebility if something was "forgotten" to look at in the past years.... always a gamble...
that wasn't accepteble :
Since they became that severe , many owners had to rebuild to original :
- lowering kits
- steel brake lines
- wide tires
- steering wheels
- sport suspension
- sport seats , belts
- engine tuning
- etc.....
as far i know we may choose the color.... upp till now...
