Power Steering Pump??

After driving my truck for about 1 hour in DC traffic, the radio crapped out and I started to hear an unframiliar sound from the engine bay. As I was pullling into the a parking lot, I realized the power steering felt very stiff, and eventually went out.

I spent the weekend working a health fair, and did not get to take the truck to the dealer until yesterday, but it was fine driving for the 5 miles over to the dealer. As I pulled in it started squealing a little.

I am hoping it is the just the power steering pump and nothing else (no check engine lights popped on), any one else have this happen? I don't think it is the cam bolt, at least I hope not.

What happens at times when it's hot out is the damn fan draws so much of the hydraulic pressure from the steering that it's hard to steer at slow speeds. Plus that fan makes one hell of a racket when it's really working hard. Not sure if that is what you experienced or not, but that's what mine does.

It's very possible that's what is was, but I have done city driving on hotter days than it was on Friday with no probs. I do greatly appreciate the feedback, so when the viper tech calls and tells me the same thing I'll know he is not full of $hit! LOL..

Funny this subject would come up today.....

As most of you know my truck has went through some minor changes over the last few weeks.

One of the items that is completely new on the truck is the steering, about the only thing that is original is the pump and the steering wheel. Over the weekend (106 outside) on short trips the truck had no problem. Went on a 160 mile trip and when I pulled over to get food, steering was the old strong arm method, everything I had and it was almost not enough (only at slow speeds, less than 5mph).

I was not happy. Just thought I would deal with it after the food. When I got back in, everything was fine. Drove another 160 miles home and the same thing, as I was pulling into the driveway, back to the strong arm method of steering, no noises, no cavitating pumps, everything sounded normal.

Turned the truck off, waited maybe 5 minutes and everything was back to normal.

Took the truck in this morning and the tech that rebuilt the front end went over what he could. Knowing that everything is new, he's going to do a search and see what kinds of problems have been reported and what the fix was.

As I find out more information, I will be sure to pass it on.

Your symptoms are just like I was experiencing before I had to have my power steering pump replaced. Since I've had the new one I have not had any more problems at all whether the fan is running or not. It was a little disconcerning to try to get into a parking space and have the power steering crap out on you. Hope your tech orders a new one for you.

One of the power steering lines was leaking, and apparently fried the pump. Going to be a few days till the part is in, so I am stuck in the Volvo S60 rental till then.:burnout:

They are also replacing the radio, it seemed to work OK except for what I described above. :dontknow:

For those of you having similar probs, you may want to get it checked out.

I had a steering pump go out...similar indications as yours. Been fine since its replacement some 15K miles ago.

mine went out....no problems since replaced....
