Practical Roll Bar...Non-NHRA Approved

As we modify our trucks to achieve more and more performance I am interested in a bolt in roll bar that is not visually intrusive and fairly inexpensive. I think it should be designed only for the driver and should accommodate four or five point seat belts, without modifying our seats.

Anyone found such a mod?

Anyone interested in manufacturing it?

My concept is not one that is designed to meet NHRA standards, it is just added protection for the driver in the event of a rollover.

I saw that a few weeks back...

But it is designed for the entire cab to include side impact.

I am really thinking of something that just extends above the drivers head, braces to the frame and is kind of like some convertible sports cars have.

It will not be huge but just some protection from a crushed cab top.

These guys are very good to work with and they will take of any questions.
Also If read the new rules technically untill we hit 10.99 I think we only need a roll bar due to the fact we have factory firewall ect. I am gonna double check. But yeah Roy give these guys a call and they'll make what ever you want.

be carefull Roy in design... a roll cage comes in most constructions closer to the head ... so can be very dangerous in a more "common" accident. We can place roll bars behind the seats in a street car but anything going in front is forbidden. Porsche sells the GT3 with that and the front pieces come with it , not mounted. Maybe a roll cage with tubes in front is only a safe combination wearing a helmet. :dontknow:

Also know that a racer is MUCH more strapped in his belts as we are in a street car.... in comparison we can "swim" around the cabin with our stock belts.
So with a cage ,use at least 4 to 5 point belts and get them tight

Good advice Barry.

You do not want to strike your head on a roll bar without a helmet. Hell, you don't want to do it with a helmet on for that matter.

I am currently working on a system utilizing super-conducting magnets similar to those used in mag -lev trains. This will basically create a "force field" or magnetic cushion around the truck. It is not visible. I will keep you updated.

The roll bar setup in my Camaro is a 4 point cage. The hoop is behind my head and the rear bars going down behind the back seat. It is all tied into the frame but I don't have any door bars or front bars. This is a street bar setup where my head cannot come in contact with the cage.

For a RC truck I would do a hoop as far back in the cab as you can get it, and a cross bar at an angle (top corner to bottom corner).

A QC is a little more difficult. I'd try to put a center hoop in where its behind the drivers seat but doesn't make it difficult for passengers to get in and out of the back. I'd also do a rear hoop, no cross bar because of the seat, and two spreader bars down the middle connecting the two hoops. Spreaders down the middle would only impact someone sitting in the center of the back seat while still giving some much needed front to back reinforcement to the center hoop.

You really DO NOT want to end up with any bars where your head might hit them unless you want to always wear your helmet and harness, oh and your passengers would too. You WILL have a serious head injury if your bare head hits a steel roll bar with accident level force. That said pickups are not known for great roof integrity and those of us pushing into the 10's and maybe eventually 9's should at least make some kind of effort to improve our own safety.

A loop as far back in the cab as possible...possibly even padded...but the superstructure designed so that we could install a four or five point harness, but retain our stock seats...

For a harness on a RC run a horizontal bar with tabs welded to it for the harness. Make SURE that the bar is at a height where the shoulder straps are not pulling down on your shoulders. The lap belt is supposed to keep your butt in the seat, the shoulder straps keep your body from moving forward. If they are pulling down you risk breaking your collar bone. Straight back over your shoulders is best. Still run a diagonal cross bar.

This would be harder to accomplish on a QC w/o cutting too much into the rear seat room. Also back seat passengers can now smack their heads on it in a crash on the street.

If your going to do this go for what passes for sub 10.99 car, don't half built it.

Having said that it needs to be easy to remove if possible if you want to street drive. No mater how much padding you have or how far back you mount it in a RC your going to have the chance of a hit with your head, and no amount of 5 point harnesses is going to stop you from hitting it if you use the stock seat which is just going to move your strapped in butt to the bar.

When I was dragging the cobra way back we built a double overhead cage, added a nascar bar down into the passenger foot well and double side impact bars and I think I was only cleared to ~9.99. Also had to build out the windshield or rollover protection out of 1.5 bar. Even then it still did not feel that safe. in the low 11's in a RC I would take my chances with the stock protection. There is a lot of mass to take G's out of the impact.

i have wondered on a bolt in bar as well for my RC i know my truck wouldnt really need it (not yet ) but my buddy builds Baja trucks for a living and he was tellin me how he could make a custom one that could bolt in and tigh into the frame

the cool factor would be high to see a roll bar in a street truck :rock:



but as far as someone making a kit i have never seen a kit for a ram (most ppl think there is no market for ram trucks (if only they where members here )

a kit for a roll bar like a four link is not something even if you find a kit, you need to do.
a kit is for basically looks and thats all , no protection , or will it work properly.

either a four link or aroll bar needs to be a custom set up to give proper protection and longevity.

now if all you are wanting is looks, then that is a different deal all together.

but still, you are talking about protection of your life
