He's in ICU. The surgeon is running tests to determine the "risk level". It's a risky operation for a young man, and well... he's not young.

My dad's got a lot going on, obviously, so I'm just getting the shotgun blast text messages that are going out to all the kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. I told my dad to tell him that he's got a TON of prayers coming his way. Thanks guys... means alot.

They decided to go on with the surgery... he should be in there now. It's expected to take 9-10 hours, so hopefully my phone won't ring till tonight.
 
Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Support you father and Grandfather in this time of need verbally and show them though you can't be there, that indeed you ARE there.
 
May God guide the hands and hearts of his surgeons and staff....

So far, so good. The repair is done. Now they have to take him off of the bypass machine, and restart his heart. From what I gather, this is the risky part. Should know in about 2 hours.

Looks like he's out of the woods for now. He's out of surgery, and on his way to ICU. They had said he had a tear in his aorta... that was an understatement. Turns out a section of the aorta from the heart into the neck was "shredded":dontknow: They replaced it, as well as a heart valve. They might have to open him back up to take care of some bleeding that's going on, but it shouldn't be a big deal... nothing like the open heart that he just went through.

My dad said it got crazy in there for a bit, and the Dr was amazed that he was alive. Thank you all.

UPDATE

They're slowly taking him off of the drugs that have been keeping his heart pumping. So far, so good. He's been moving his thumb a bit, and they can tell by the machines/vitals that he can hear when my dad talks to him. Encouraging news...

Damn Brad, I just read this thread. At least it soundslike things are going better, if you need anything just call and let us know. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
