Hey Y'all,

I just had my Ezlift installed in the tailgate of my truck..... I must admit that I didn't put it in myself....But what the hell....

The ezlift has got to be the simplest non-gadget ever created for the purpose of taking the weight off your tailgate.... It is essentially a torsion bar... a 3 sided rectangle consisting of one long leg and two short legs.....

You drill a hole in the sidewall near the hinge of your tailgate and another hole near the center of the lower edge of the tailgate itself.....the two short legs of the rectangle go (one each) into these two holes....

Once installed, these two ends remove the weight in both the up and down movement of the tailgate due to the fact that they are always trying to return to their upright position. Thus assisting in both raising and lowering the tailgate....

It's so simple, I don't understand why the damn this isn't standard equipment...It's probably a total of 2 dollars worth of spring steel...

Once installed, your tailgate raises and lowers literally with two fingers....

I think it cost me about 30 bux.........

It's made by Hopkins manufacturing.... Here's the link:

By the way, it's hard to find it sold anywhere else... I tried... Just buy it from the manufacturer...

I have one on both of my trucks, it's one of those inventions where you ask yourself "damn, why didn't I think of that?" It's very easy to install and very nifty. Ebay is the best place to get them I think.

Wish I could... I fell and broke the L4 vertebra in my back this summer and I'm not yet in shape to do weight lifting ;) Maybe 20 years ago I could.

Anyway, I bought my easy-lift from 4wheelonline too. it was $25 including shipping. Just a simple torsion bar.

I haven't installed it yet...I'm still waiting for my wife to remove the tailgate :star:

This sounds pretty great. Do you have to remove the tailgate to install it?

What protects the drilled holes from rusting over time? Does it come with grommets or anything to keep it from reaming out the holes over time?

Nope, you don't have to remove the tailgate to install it, and everything you need to install it, comes with it. I don't think you'd have to worry about rust either.

If you drill, you'll expose bare metal. That metal is now unprotected, and will (eventually) rust.

Grommets aren't a bad idea, but it might be too tight of a fit. I'd apply some type of protectant to the drilled hole (WD-40, touch-up paint, etc.), then maybe some heat shrink tubing around the EZlift bar where it contacts the hole.

I think I'm gonna pick one up. I'll post what I do regarding the holes and the install.

You absolutely do have to remove the tailgate to install it.....

Unless you're effin Houdini..............

Gotcha, Jerry.....

OMG!! - this is botchery :p :p ;) :D

Actually it sounds very neat. I think I heard Jerry talking about something like that. The reason they aren't standard from factory is that extra 2 bucks you talked about. Heaven forbid they toss that in on a 50k truck :dontknow:

Mine came today. I'll be installing it tomorrow.

Any particular tips for the Ram from those who've done it? The instructions aren't rocket science, but they are pretty generic.

Thanks!

Get someone to help you work with the tailgate. If you plan on doing it all by yourself, tape towels all over the bumper area and sides to protect it. You have to tilt the tailgate at a sharp angle during reinstall to thread the torsion bar into the bottom of the tailgate where you drilled the 3/8th hole. After drilling the holes, I took touchup paint and painted the holes to keep them from rusting. Good luck with the install. I'm sure your going to like the new lighter tailgate.
