Pulled the Trucks Teeth Today!!!

Took out the complete rear end (4.88's) and replaced it with Eddies old 4.10 rear. I'm thinking I won't mind driving it during the winter months with the higher gearing. Damn did it make a difference ! I have a couple of long trips to make in it and I am real interested in the fuel mileage difference. The last trip was to Panama City wih the 4.88's and it finally got up to about 16.5 mpg. With the old 4.56's I have gotten 19.5 on long trips. We will see...
It sure feels like it has long legs now.
are u runing the stock trans ratio if not what overdrive ratio are you runing

Yes, I just put the 4.88's in a few months ago. Mainly wanting to see the difference in performance and mileage will change it back in late Feb. or early March. Just in time for the dragstrips to open back up.

Now I have had all three of our most popular gear ratios in one truck, might be able to answer a few questions.
4.56 - 4.88 - 4.10....

never having done a gear swap what is involved? i shattered my spider gears in my gmc for the second time and i am thinking of doing the job myself. i remember this from school books thou.
pull off diff cover
pull pins that hold the axle in?
slide carrier off?

am i even close?

Wish I could help Scoob but you would have to ask my mechanic. BUT if your diff is similar to a 12 bolt Chevy the carrier and the spiders come out easy.

changing out a dodge rear end is not the same as a gm rear end ,,,the pinon gears shimming is a pain in the rear end :D

its a 14 bolt. :p had to figure that out last time i broke it.
i am thinking of doing the job myself as i would like to go to florida to go fishing with my boat this year and the dodge is out of the question to tow the boat.

A spider change is no big deal a complete gear setup is a MAJOR pain in the ass.
I've done many GM rears and can knock one out in about 3 hours.
this 4.56 swap took me almost 2 weeks. Due to wrong bearings in install kit,no seals in install kit & then 1 full day setting pinion bearing preload and depth.
Now that the jobs done & I finally get to go for a spin.... I've got a whine from the gears:mad:   gotta go back in & figure what is not right although the pattern looked good after setting everything up.

Phil the whine should be in the setup. Those gears were quiet when I took them out. My 4.88's are noisy.

Yes Jack thats what I'm assuming. I did notice that the gears had a wear pattern set in them already. When I set them up the contact pattern I had showed contact on either side of existing wear pattern. So I'm thinking the noise is coming from that difference(void or gap-close tolerance)in the mesh of gears will cause a whine.
Got to head to Dallas for training later today so I wont get to tear into it until Friday

I think those were the gears in place when I broke the spiders but the gear never made any noise even after the new spiders. The spiders did not expolde in the differential, they broke pretty clean without a bunch of parts floating around in the rear.

you're gonna blow your engine if u keep those 4:10's in,take them out before you hurt yourself!!!
