it has a slight whine from the differential under aceleration,it also chatters or "grinds" on a sharp low speed turn (left or right).:( i assume it has a "limited slip" being a 4x4,but what would cause this? i checked oil level and its okay, would a heavier oil and a couple of bottles of friction modifier help? is it the limited slip not releasing ? i don't know much about the limited slip rears and how they work:dontknow: THIA

should not sound any different than your truck would in a sharp turn.
i can hear the clutches slipping in my 10 when i make a hard turn.

the clutches in the differential are getting worn , try changing the fluid to a good synthetic first, sometimes it will take care of some of the noise, if not , replace the clutches

Okay tony.....how about friction modifier, will that doing anything to help?

I added a bigger pan in the rear plus changed to a syn fluid. Added syn fluid to the front.

Is your son's AWD or 2WD with part time FWD?

part time FWD.....

I use to run mobile 1 in my transwer case .. And is she is making noises whe u r driving maybe she is not all the way our of 4x4 . Try stoping put it in 4x4 when in park and drive for about mile then stop put your truck in a park and 2 high and back up about 30-40' so springs reles all the was .

Just change the oil and add a couple of bottles of the friction modifier. That will more than likely cure the noises. If not, do like Tony said and rebuild the posi.

okay its not just a the whine...when i turn left or right from a stop, there is a chatter/vibration from the rear end. of course one wheel is spinning faster than the other causing a bind? i have heard the term "windup"? or something or other?

Just a note....because it is a 4X4 does not mean it has limited slip...LSD was an option and was rarely ordered on 4X4s....
is this info in the glove on the label? it is a 3:92. (i bought it used)

the chatter is wehre the clutches are locking and unlocking usually, we had the same prob in alot of the chevy trucks in past years, simple swap and some friction modifier and they were good to go, but we thouroly cleaned everything too by removin the rear cover

yup...i was planing on removing the cover and douching real good:D by swap you mean to synthetic?

sorry, yes sir, remove the rear cover, and jsut super clean it, we even used brake cleaner and compressed air to spray the clutches real good and then put in clean new fluid , back then we added basically whale oil, but since they have went to something different,

i have a brand new 4oz bottle or redline synthetic friction modifier if ya want it, jsut shoot me $5 for shipping and its yours man, not even sure hwo much it is, but never opened has a ton of dust on it,
