i just found out my smart card reader is not working on my vec 3,so i ordered the program from roe to hook up my laptop via usb.
so my question is i am reading thru these instructions and just wondering how hard it is to download the program and is it easy to mess with the tuning of the truck.

You do not need the smart card reader to tune w/ the vec. Vec tuning is something you can learn, but it will take some time to understand....fully possible, but BE VERY CAREFUL as there is no 'safety'.

You need to read the manual and if you have any questions give Sean a call. He will help you out ;)

Once you get the hang of it, its not that bad. Just need access to a dyno....if you run into any issues, you can log a run and send the log file and tune to Sean. He will give you pointers on any issues you may have.

BTW, dont load a Vec2 tune into the Vec3. It will corrupt some of the parameters.

Did you install the card reader software? It is separate from the VEC software. It is included with the setup on both VEC 2 and VEC 3. Your computer needs to identify the card reader, like any other device (data card, stick memory, etc.).

Did your card reader work before and not now? On some computers you have to put the card reader in the same USB port each time to properly identify.

It is easy to tune with, very flexible, but be careful of your inputs, because it will let you modify the tune without constraints, unlike Superchip or Hypertech programmers. ALWAYS save the stock program it came with so you have something to go back to if you mess up the tune. Use another card to write your program to, so you will always have your basic tune from Roe.

The other day was the first time I hooked into the USB, and used the software on the VECIII. Different, but once you manipulate around a bit...not too bad.
I had to capture the software off one of my performance tunes, from one of my VEC's...(call it VEC "A")
I inserted the card in box "A"... ignition on... captured the tune to the laptop...then wrote it to the other VEC box.... (VEC "B")
I had to do this as the new VEC ("B") was not accepting the performance tune I was using for box "A".
Sean talked me through the whole thing, and after some minor frustrations...(I kept closing the captured program... touchpad was kickin my ass) managed to get it done.
I still have some other issues I must tend to...VEC included...so in the future I will gain a bit more experience related to the software.

I believe Bone has been tuning with his for quite some time.... :dontknow:

Post up a dyno (w/ AF ratio) and we'll help you out.
My computer with VEC3 software is in the shop. I have the VEC2 on the wife's computer here.

Did you get your card reader to work?
Do you have a wideband A/F gauge on your truck?

i purchased the truck used and when i got it,it had a vec 2 in it,so i sent it in to sean at roe and he called me about 2 days later and told me that my reader is bad,he than told me he could send it off to get fixed and it would be 500.00 dollars or the alternative would be to buy the program for my laptop so i could hook up thru usb.so i am assuming when the previous owner had it,it did not work either,so basically sean said it is like a flash right now because it has a performance program in it right now but i can't change anything unless i have the program which i just received.

So your VEC box is bad, not your card reader? A card reader costs about 30 bucks.
Making a little more sense now.

from what sean said at roe it will not read the smart cards but he did put a program in it.
roe told me the only way i would be able to play around with the programming would be to buy the program from them which is a disk that i could down load into my harddrive and hook up to the vec via 9 pin connector to usb going into my lap top.
so to answer your question, yes it does sound like my card reader is bad.

Terminology is key here.
Here is the Mini Argos II card reader: http://www.todos.se/Todos/products/products_ArgosMini.html
These cost less than 50 bucks.

If so, why don't you just buy another one?

this is the confusing part:
from what sean said at roe it will not read the smart cards but he did put a program in it.
If it is not reading cards, then the card reader can't put programs into the laptop. So are you now talking about the actual VEC box/container?
