I would say that is not normal.

White gold should stay white. It is possible that the ring is yellow gold with white gold outer layer. I would have it looked at.

JMO I am not a jeweler...

Just have it cleaned....(polished)

It's probably no more than a chemical reaction to having contact with her skin.....

Thanks Tim,

I dropped it off Friday and she cleaned. The ring is worse then it was before.

Here is what I found:

I don't believe this is something to be very concerned about since all is restorable to near original. If the ring is white gold, this is the yellow tarnish but more predominant since the other metal is white in color and contrasting. If white gold, the ring may be cleaned and buffed professionally then given a plating of rhodium. The rhodium plating is not unreasonable in price and puts a nice white color on the gold, while preventing the yellow from showing through (almost all white gold will show a yellow tint in time since it is not totally white in the first place and tarnish is yellow).

The guy I buy jewelry from told me that White Gold requires maintenance to stay nice and shiny. Apparantly Platinum requires even more maintenance than white gold. I don't know the details of what "maintenance" is but I trust the guys information. I have done business with him for over 10 years with great results.

I don't think the gold itself should tarnish or turn yellow, however, it could be plated with rhodium or som other plating - here's a little info that might help

Thanks Denise.

I will be calling the owner tomorrow. I just want to be able to have my knowledge base up to par before hand.

All the more info is greatly appreciated.

The above is exactly what my jeweler told me. Good information...and accurate.

I am starting to understand... :)

He is one of my tenants so definitely want to keep on good terms with him.

Sometimes white gold still has some yellow gold it in, too......

If it isn't to your satisfaction, then I'd take it back to where you bought it and let them know that this is unacceptable to you.....

Maybe they will offer an explanation that works for you......

Or you could simply take it to another good jeweler and have him explain the process to you... It may be something that represents a flaw in the gold, but maybe not....

It's really hard to say without seeing the piece.... An objective 3rd party is a good way to get to the truth about this piece of jewelry...

Thanks Chris,

I don't mind having it protected, I just wish the manager would of told me right from the start...

True, and it isn't acceptable. The ring was polished Friday, and it is twice as bad as it was before. :(

I will talk to the owner this time, the sales manager didn't correct the problem and doesn't seem to care.

Take care,

Wil

The problem for me is age, 505. She has only been wearing it for a couple months.

Not too mention being polished Friday, and by today (Sunday), it is already looking like yellow gold... :dontknow: I don't think it's suppose to 'tarnish' this quickly????

Thanks

i would take it back no doubt about it. When you pay good money for jewlery you want it to be perfect so take it back and explain that you are not happy with the piece any reputable jewler will make it rightjust my 2 cents..... i was thinking that maybe she was allergic to white gold but you ruled that out godd luck with this i am sure you will get it figured out:D
