I don't know if this is correct (I'm sure someone in Georgia can confirm this) but this is some information I found out from a mid-Georgia tv station . . .

ACADEMY SPORTS & OUTDOORS DISTRIBUTION CENTER!!! (200 Jobs) - I-16 (Twiggs Co.) - Coming 2009

New Jobs Headed to Twiggs
Last Update: 3/28/2008 6:06:13 PM
Author: Bernie O'Donnell

A Texas company plans to build a million-dollar truck maintenance facility in the Twiggs county industrial park, near the intersection of highway 96 and Interstate 16, according to county administrator Glenn Barton.

Texas Freight will hire about 50 people, mostly truck drivers and office personnel, said Ken Smith, the company's president. The company will transport goods for Academy Sports, which is building a $50 million distribution center in the Twiggs industrial park.

Texas Freight's growth in Twiggs county will depend on Academy Sports, Smith said. But it could employ from 100 to 150 in three to five years, Smith added.

It's the second company that signs up to move into Twiggs County's 715-acre industrial park.

Texas Freight bought seven acres at $18,750 per acre, county administrator Glenn Barton said. They did not get any tax incentives, Barton said.

Academy Sports was the first company to move into the Twiggs industrial park and got more than 145 acres for free.

The Jeffersonville-Twiggs County Industrial Development Authority spent about $1.9 million dollars buying the land for the industrial park. It hoped to attract industry after the county lost hundreds of kaolin jobs.

Twiggs County Commission Chairman Ray Bennett says the deals with Academy Sports and Texas Freight are steps in the right direction. He hopes other industries will locate there.

"We know that we are in a choice location with I-16... and with highway 96 and we know that in time we'll have other interests," Bennett said.

But for now, Twiggs officials are celebrating the fifty new jobs and what they mean for the county's economy.

"It'll be a lot of money, extra money coming in for the town itself," said trucker Anthony Preston, who stopped for lunch in Jeffersonville. "Plus all the taxes and everything, that really helps. Small fuel stops, like the place like this right here, it'll be a big impact on them."

Ken Smith expects construction for Texas Freight's facility to begin in April. Dublin Construction will build the facility, Smith said. It should be complete by October. And the company hopes it will be fully operational by early 2009.

Texas Freight is based in Houston, Texas. The Twiggs County facility will be its second in the country.
