Question for the Diesel techs.

What causes exhaust on the inside of the air filter on a basic 4 stroke 4 cylinder non turbo non EGR engine?

Valve lash is ok, a little on the tight side but no valves being held open.

if there is no possible way the exhaust gas can get to the air filter , has to be puking up through the intake valve! cough cough!!! does the engine run ok?

Any chance the engine got ran backwards?

I have had that happen when powering out in a gravel truck,and know several others that have had that happen too!(diesel)

Engine runs perfect. A 4 stroke cannot run backwards.

Exhaust leak and it's sucking it in, if the airbox have one of those cold weather bypass valves stuck open. What's it on so I know what I'm looking at.

A Massey 383 tractor and there isnt any exhaust leaks.

Me too, a 2 stroke can run backwards not a 4 stroke.

I will be willing to bet my truck to your truck that a diesel engine can run backwards?
Its not good for it,but they will do it! I',ve been there first hand and know others that have experienced it too.
Who else has experieced a diesel engine that has ran backwards??

My CAT did it before . Moust of time if air filter is not clean and it got a get air from somewhere so it runs backwards ...
And that was 4 cylinder 9L cat motor .
Head on motor gets toasted if that happens moust of times .

mech. Cats. let the Jakes stay on too long & kicked it backwards.

& killed one with the clutch & it ran backwards.

both times had mass quanties of white smoke out the intake.

Cat has a published procedure for an engine that has ran backwards.

its the style of fuel system that make them capable of runnin bass ackwards.
