my son's 06 1500 night runner (not an srt) has a REF head unit...whats the proper way to add a couple of subwoofers and an amp to power them.splice into the door speaker wires?this is what he did and hes' not happy with the sound,he is getting the higher frequency sounds also (he did say the amp had a filter switch) THIA

i ended up replacing everything. i added a sub to mine originally and it sounded better but the infinity system has a amp driving the one sub. had too much bass so i added 4 tweeters. when i changed the 10's out for 12's i think ive got too much speaker and not enough airspace for the 12's even with a 1000w amp puching them. the 10;s sounded better. he needs to keep that in mind. i ordered the box for 12's by mistake. would sell it in a heartbeat and go back with 10's it sounds bad azzzz but the 12's ought to hit way harder than they do.

hey eddie, he has 2 -10" woofers in a box under the rear seat.
id stick with those, if he goes bigger they wont sound as good, any stereo shop should be able to wire in a amp to push them. crutchfield has some good ones. you do get what you pay for or you can try ebay.

he and a friend have already wired the amp up,they spliced into the speaker wiring in the doors,is this the only option with the stock head unit? ( its a REF head unit)

The factory HU generally will not give you the adjustments that one would want. I would assume they used an adapter of some sort to get RCA out from the stock head unit. How many channels does the amp offer? Maybe list the type and model number and we can check. Im no expert and I will jump into anything. I had installed a few systems prior to my truck but it had been 10 years or so.
Here are some pics of a recent install that I did on my truck. I replaced everything from the head unit down. When Im off work during christmas I plan on putting the amps behind the read seats and laying sound insulation down.
