I have an '03 Navigator that recently developed what I think may be a problem. When it sits up for a few days the exhaust emmits blue smoke for about 20 seconds at startup. Is that normal:dontknow: ? The stealership claims it is. I think they're just pulling my wood (term used on 'non-offensive'). Would the fact that I use 87 octane in it be the culprate? Somebody please let me know.

Your valve guide seals need to be replaced, while sitting they are allowing oil to seep past them into the cylinder, at start up it burns off, and after its warm they swell just enough to seal. Thats just my $2 worth:)

Stinkers right, although there is one other possibility. Check your PVC valve. It can sometimes stick open and allow oil to be sucked into the intake at startup.

Question. Does it do it every time or just once and a while?

I agree whith has been said so far but I would like to know;

1. How many miles on the truck/motor?

2. What intervals has the oil been changed at and what kind/weight of oil is used?

3. Does the motor use any oil between changes and if so did the consumption increase when this started?

4. Has the engine been overheated recently or concurrent to when this started?

I believe it is the flux capacitor going bad. Happens quite alot these days with Navigators. Check the 40 weight ball bearings with WD40 oil and gauze pads. It's all 40 weight these days....If you jump it with 1.21 gigawatts it might clear up.:)

Definitely burning oil as the previous posts stated.

WTF?!?!?

2. What intervals has the oil been changed at and what kind/weight of oil is used? Every 3,000 miles. Lincoln does the oil changes and servicing.
3. Does the motor use any oil between changes and if so did the consumption increase when this started? No oil is consumed.

4. Has the engine been overheated recently or concurrent to when this started? No Overheating.

I thought burning oil would produce black smoke, like white smoke is caused by water.

"Hey Doc.....! What's a jigawatt.........................?"

Burning oil, Blue smoke.

Burning excess gas, Black smoke.

Getting water into the combustion chamber, White smoke.

Burning Green Buds, Good smoke.

I hope this clears it all up.

Bill.
