radiator reservoir

on our trucks does the the reservoir plumb back into the radiator or is the only line in and out is the one from the radiator cap? I'm thinking about pitching it and getting a smaller more discrete reservoir.

i've already got a smaller one it does not go back into the rad...... it's sopose to pressure-ize but and flow back over the the RAD some how
