Rear differential fluid

Hey need some advice on how tobchange my rear differential fluid,im gona do it tomm myself for the first time ...got an idea on how to do it, but if anyone can give me the 1,2,3 i would appricate it thanks - Nick

I think it goes something like: "get fluid, find drain pan, put truck on jack stands, remove drain plug, spill all over outside of pan, cuss & yell, throwing things trying to find rags, clean up mess, put new oil in, forgot drain plug, spilling all over ground, cuss and yell again, clean up mess again, put drain plug back in, get more fluid, over fill, spill all over again, cuss and yell, clean up mess again, remove drain plug to get extra fluid out, spill all over again, cuss and yell, clean up mess, drive, not enough fluid, burn up rear end, tow to shop..."

Obviously not expert advise. But i bet in the owners manual there is the correct amount and type to put in. Other than that pull the drain plug on the back cover, let it drain. may be easiest to jack the front end up to have a bit of a slant towards the back to get as much oil out as you can. Usually when you fill a rear end, you fill it up to the hole when the truck is sitting level. I'd check the owner's manual, it'll have the capacity, but the plugs are on the back cover, takes a big allen wrench if i remember correctly. There aren't any special tricks to changing rear end fluid.

thanks TooFast ....that is pretty much what i thought would happen ...but you left the part out were you run to get the raggs and knock over you beer!!!:beer: thanks for the advice!

What brand fluid do you plan on putting back in?

No problem, some things seem tougher than they are, no different than changing engine oil really, unless you find a bolt rattling around in there. Oh, clean both drain plugs off too, they have a magnet in them to pick up fine metal particles in the fluid, no need to put those back in dirty!

If I remember right, Mobil1 75-90W synthetic oil, tube of additive for limited slip dif, thread sealant for drain and filler plugs. If you are going to take off the cover then you will need a putty knife and a tube of black RTV.

When refilling get truck level and fill to right up to the bottom of the filler hole and that's it your done.

When refilling get truck level and fill to right up to the bottom of the filler hole and that's it your done.

Just make sure you don't dump the beer in, thins the oil too much.

DAMMIT!! I forgot the drain plug thread sealant last year.. :dontknow: I'll change it again next week anyways..

Run truck to warm up the oil. Drain (3/8th's drive not an allen needed) then refill. I use factory fill along with 2 bottles versus recommended one bottle of limited slip additive. Expect to find plenty of paste like material attached to the magnet. Clean and reinstall. 100,000 miles and still running fine...

I don't pull my cover but do replace the oil every 10K miles...ymmv

No problem. Pretty easy to change the diff fluid. Like someone else said, just drive it for about 5-10 miles before you drain it. Heats up the oil to thin it out, drains much better that way.

When you remove the drain and fill hole plugs re tighten to 20ft. lbs.

At the risk of being repititious.....don't forget the limited slip additive.

i leave mine cold so i can drink a beer or two while it drains. no sense in gettin in a hurry...lol
