Ok for those of you whom dont know. My rear main seal has been leaking since about 2k miles. Took her in last June when the clutch burned up and asked dealer to check. They said no leak, fluid under the truck was from a burned up slave!! Get the truck back and sure enough the mystery fluid is there again. Take her in this past April and they finally say its leaking. A month later they get the part in and complete the fix. Well two weeks later I have the same fluid under the truck again......as well as four dings in paint from the asshole mechanic whom banged my door against the lift!!(of course I did not notice this until later after I had left the place.) I have another appointment on July 3 to take her in again.

My question is.....other than dropping the tranny, pulling the clutch, flywheel out. Do they have to completly remove the oil pan to change this seal? The service mgr told me they did not when I picked up my truck this past month. I have heard they you actually have to raise the engine a bit just to remove the oil pan.

Boomer, Stingray, Daniel you guys are mechanics that know this engine. How difficult is this fix? Talking with another member, he told me his dealer faked a fix the first time he took her in. Tried to stop the leak with some silicone. WTF

Anybody got any tips or suggestions for me?

On a good note, here are some pics of my truck and Maui Life with his son Shane on his birthday Sat night at the track. Neither of us raced that night. I am not gonna race until my dealer issues are resolved.

Patrick,
I don't have any advice on the rear main on these engines, on all other engines I've done them on though, it's a royal PITA and a major project.

Nice pics though....:)

Thanks Steve, I am really hoping one of our resident mechanics will chime in.

The drive over last night to the track was so pretty I had to shot some pics.

Our resident L dude, ran a 12.05!!! He has run high 11's during the colder months!! He is fast and its sounds so good!! Cool guy too!

Patrick....to change the rear main you have to drop the tranny and get the flywheel out. No need to remove the oil pan....but I don't think it's your seal that is leaking...I would look into seeing if your cooler lines are leaking. The oil then runs down the side of the block and drips right where the bellhousing is. I thought for sure my rear seal was leaking only to find it was fine after I took everything apart.

Along with what VPRPWR said it could also be your oil pan gasket. Another possibility could be the rear main housing seal but I doubt it. That's number 6 and 8 in the pic.

BTW, you do have to raise the engine to remove the oil pan.
