After I installed all the poly bushings for the suspension. I figured I would move onto the front brake calipers. Mine where pretty bad as far as the paint/metal being pitted so I couldn't get by just cleaning them up and throwing on some clear coat, the rears are in good shape so I'll clean them and reclear them. And I don't have time to powder coat them so I rattle canned(all Krylon) them for the time being.

I used a wire wheel and my brother's high speed sander with 800/1000 grit. A dremel would have been nice to get by the bleed nipple but I burned it up the day before. I removed the bolts on the calipers and cleaned them up on the bench wire wheel, preped them and clear coated them. Cleaned up the calipers primered them(should have got primer with filler but O well) 4 coats of white primer,4 coats bright red, 4 coats clear. Now I'm going to get a mate to do some red/white/blue SRT decals for them.

Nice. Were you able to do this with out taking the brake hose off or did you have to remove the caliper completely off the truck to do so. I need to do mines as well but never bled brakes b4 and dont want to do so. I was thinking of doing mines with them on the truck . i have to replace my rotors any way so im not worried about paint getting on the rotors.

I was planning on taking the caliper off the rotor and tape off the hoses etc and leave the brake line connected so i dont have to bleed the brakes. Do you think this will be a problem in repainting the calipers?

He said he took the caliper to the bench grinder wire wheel.

I've done mine on the truck with a duplicolour caliper Paint kit, taped off what I didn't want painted and they came out like new looking, going to re-do mine again with a little twist to them this time!

Sweet I orderd some " Viper decals and am going to be doing the same next weekend:rock: Allthough living in FL My calipers are in great shape:D so easy peeeeeezzee.

looks good, wonder how it'll hold up to the heat. i really need to do mine esp. since i've done some grinding on them:D

Oh ok cool. Yeah im planning on taking it off the rotor but leave it connected to the break line. Was it hard to do them or piece of cake. I was going to use the wire wheel with a drill, then hand sand some after that. Then coat with dupli color self etching primer then dupli color engine enamel and then clear effex.

Do you have any advice/tips since you had done this once before?:dontknow:

The caliper was still on the rotor, but if you need to change rotors you could take the caliper off and remove the rotor and reinstall the caliper and just tape up everything up that you dont want paint on.

no but place something under the caliper to support the weight so you dont damage the brake line. It may be easier to work on the caliper if you bolt it back on without the rotor.

I have painted all my calipers this way except 1 set i got powdercoated. All my cars have seen some track time and I didn't have any problems with the finish on the calipers. The biggest thing that is hard on the clear is wheel cleaners. I don't spray it on my brakes and most of the time I take my wheels off to clean them and give the calipers a wipe down and maybe some wax.
The powercoated ones have been going strong for about 6 years-if I had a little more time I would have powdercoated them. Cheers J

I used a few different wire wheels on a drill along with a brillow pad for a drill. The 12mm bolt I removed along with the metal clips that secure the brake pads I cleaned those up on the bench wire wheel. The more time you but into the prep work the better the brakes will come out. Over all its pretty easy. I also used a heat gun to speed up the drying process inbetween coats but dont get to close as it will damage the paint.

If it makes it easier for everyone I can do a DIY and take pics of the tools I used. Over all it depends on how much time you have and having the right tools for the job makes it easier. I had to stop a few times and run up to the hardware store for wire wheels and other crap.

Looks good man.
Thanks

Yeah, make sure you do it perfect b/c I will have my truck to your house after you complete yours. :D

lol ha ha yeah i will give it a shot and see how it comes out. I hear its all in the prep work. will be my first time if i dont have to work next weekend. If i do then i probably will start on them and a later time but deff no later than the first weekend in august.

So as I stated before I wanted to do red/white/blue SRT decal but since I did the calipers in red I changed the decal to black/white/blue and when I get tired of it I'll change them to something else.
