As Roy has noted on the Music thread, Mary Travers died today.

Mary was best known as the female voice of the hugely popular folk trio known as Peter, Paul and Mary.

I cut my vocal harmonic teeth singing the songs of Peter, Paul and Mary tunes in the very early 60's when beatniks roamed Greenwich ("Grennich") Village and Pete Seeger was singing the songs of Woody Guthrie... Those were the days of the Weavers, Dave Van Ronk and our friend, Rambling Jack Elliot... who later inspried Bob Dylan to be none other than Bob Dylan...

Mary Travers soaring female 'five' (alto) harmony inspired young people all over America to start singing in harmony groups like hers, the Kingston Trio- The Smothers Brothers and a few years later, Cass Elliot from the Mama's and Papa's.

Mary died after a long battle with leukemia.... She was 72.....

We still love you, Mary.......

God Bless

RIP. My father had me listening to some Peter Paul and Mary when I was young. My favorite song was "talkin candy bar blues". I still listen to it every so often. Just don't make music like that anymore :(

I still smile when I hear her songs...PP&M were some of the most influential artists in a time when protest music was becoming popular...much of their music was political commentary...but to me is was just very pleasing to the ear...

Your voice will live on Mary, in many ways.

.... All the Flowers seem to be falling to the ground these days. :(

My bad. It's because I'm out of the country. Flowers seem to fall when I am away.:(

The Sharon Tate photos only serve as a vignette reminder of the desperate nature of the 60's generation....

Now, we are certainly talking "harmony". I love the story about "Mama Cass" not being able to hit a certain vocal note until a jar of what may have been acid, fell off a ledge and hit her in the head. Philips tells the story, I think..............Tim, did you ever hear that one? PP&M were transitioning out of a time when Lawrence Welk ruled and groups like the Kingston Trio reined. One of my favorites........................ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW6NVcqcRVE Still gives me the chills. RIP Mary.
