Legendary wrestling figure Captain Lou Albano, perhaps best known for his association with pop singer Cyndi Lauper, died Wednesday, according to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Captain Lou Albano reached a new level of fame in the '80s with his association with Cyndi Lauper.

Albano, 76, was "one of the company's most popular and charismatic legends," the company said in a statement.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

"Albano began his storied career with Vincent J. McMahon in the 1960s as one half of 'The Sicilians' tag team with his partner Tony Altimore," the WWE said. "He will be greatly missed by the WWE and his fans."

Albano, who was with the WWE from 1983 to 1996, was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 1996.

He started as a tag team wrestler in the 1950s but became a successful manager of champion wrestlers in the 1970s, according to a biography on the WWE Web site.

Albano was recognizable by his penchant for unbuttoned Hawaiian shirts and a trademark beard, which was usually bound by a rubber band.

His persona earned him the distinction of "one of the most hated men" in wrestling for 15 years, the WWE biography said.

Albano's image evolved in the 1980s, when he teamed with Lauper on several music videos, such as "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," and wrestling appearances.

As his celebrity status grew, Albano landed acting jobs, including a role on several episodes of the "Miami Vice" TV series, the biography said.

Albano became a cartoon in 1989, when he was the voice of Mario "Jumpman" Mario for 17 episodes of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" according to the Internet Movie Database.

Sad..nice guy too..got to meet him a long time ago..Some friends of mine were related to him somehow..came to a bbq at their house. I think I was like 13 at the time..We use to watch him late at night..Wrestling used to come on at like midnight on Saturdays..George The Animal Steele, Cheif Jay Strongbow, Ernie Ladd, The Iron Shiek, etc.....My mother used to get pissed because we would watch the show and then recreate it in the living room...4 boys and various friends made a hell of a racket at 1 am I guess..lol,

Yup, I think wrestling was on channel 17 back then if I remember right. Same channel that had Dr. Shock on Saturday afternoons.

back then I think we got 3 or 4 channels..ABC, NBC, CBS, and a local one like 11..I think it was on that channel..We had a 19in Zenith black and white...lol..I remember it was green..lol..This was...hmm..mid 70s I think..I remember wrestling would be on, and when it was over, they played the Star Spangled Banner and the station went off the air until 6 the next morning when they had the US Farm report, and then cartoons for a couple hours..lol

I didn't know Lou was with the WWE.. From what I saw he was WWF.. I'd bet his rubber cheek band on it. That was way before that whole BS that caused the name change..

Oh and girls still just wanna have fun.

R.I.P. Lou..

Hey, didn't George the Animal Steele have a green tongue? Or was that just a rumor? And why hasn't anyone mentioned Jimmy Superfly Snuka? He was like the Rock of the 70's and early 80's. I would swear that guy could fly off the ropes.. He had a mean figure-4 leg lock. And wasn't them Samoans affiliated with the Tonga Kid? Then there were the Freebirds with that faggot having the long blonde hair and beard.. And what ever happened between Sgt. Slaughter and the Iron Sheik? Did thy ever kiss and make up?

RIP Captain Lou. You and so many of the other great rasslin icons brought me many hours of enjoyment. Todays offerings in the WWE owe you and all before them many thanks for being the front runners in the industry they reap rewards in today.

If I had a beard I would be wearing rubber bands in it today:)

RIP, Lou, Andre, Mr. Perfect, Junk Yard dog, Owen Hart, Rick Rude, Gorilla Monsoon, The British Bull Dog, Miss Elizabeth, Classy Freddie Blassie, Hawk of the LOD, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Chris Benoit...
