Walter Leland Cronkite, Jr. (November 4, 1916 - July 17, 2009) was a American broadcast journalist, best known as anchorman for the CBS Evening News for 19 years (1962–81). During the heyday of CBS News in the 1970s and 1980s, he was often cited in viewer opinion polls as "the most trusted man in America" because of his professional experience and kindly demeanor. Cronkite died on July 17, 2009 at the age of 92.

indeed R.I.P. i was working on my truck when i heard this on the radio just now..
 
Just talking with my grandmother about this, she said it felt like losing a member of her family to that generation. I felt the same about Peter Jacobsen, I grew up watching him and Brokaw.

You know, with the current celebrating of the First Moon mission, I can remember Walter sitting in front of the cameras announcing the progress of the first landing and tearing up when they announced "The Eagle has landed".

RIP Walter.
