As some of you remember I was the first truck allowed into the NASA program (not space program). I just returned from 2 days of road racing at the 2.1 mile Hastings Motorsports Park. It was awesome!!

For the Viper powered truck you could ask for more from a road coarse. Straighaways where with 7 pounds of boost you can reach speeds of 100-105 mph and really only one (maybe two) hard braking areas. I did the entire coarse in 3rd gear. The power/torque range and the gearing is such that high g turns are not in the boost range so when you come out and push the gas pedal its continuous but not so much the boost upsets the rear end.

I did a total of about 120 miles (6 20 minute sessions) with no problems whatsoever. The other drivers in my group as well as other groups and the crowd were pretty amazed that a 5000 pound truck could run with (and pass) a supercharged NSX and a fairly new Porsche Carrera. Some of them didnt mind cause they loved hearing the exhaust from behind or when getting past. I had MANY compliments on the trucks performance and the way it sounded over the past 2 days. I'll upload numerous pics including one that supposedly has be on the NSX's ass when I'm trying to pass him (on the inside of the track no-less).

Anyway, the truck is a blast and I passed the test as far as the directors and instructors are concerned. I was told I set the bar very high for future trucks but it looks like sport trucks that were made for the track (SRT Ram, Lightnings) will be allowed to participate with the NASA club.

Pics will be posted soon I hope. Oh yah, I got my gas mileage down to a 4.0 mpg during the 20 minute events...basically 1/4 tank each run

RIGHT ON!!! And I love that gas mileage. We now you were workin it:D

Here is my favorite!!! ............... :D Good pics Dave, thanks for sharing

If I really wanted to I could have "nudged" him a bit to the side but I had to be on my best behavior. I did get black flagged this afternoon. It was my last 20 minute run so I sorta decided to do a burnout down the hotlap lane. I got a yellin' at from our group leader then told to go have some fun :)

The whole experience of shocking everyone at the event makes it worth keeping the truck...for now. NOBODY would have ever guessed this truck could do what it did this past weekend.

HELL YES!! - we need more representation  And the RED with a wing looks very awesome :D :D

Looks like you had a great time.

Not trying to spoil your fun, but be careful in regard to oil pressure. These engines have been known to suck air and lose oil pressure during hard cornering.

Trust me, after what I went through recently with my previous blown motor I was eyeballing the oil pressure quite a bit. On Sunday I did a few hard runs to see if I could improve my time then took it down a notch both to save some tires and the motor. The motor was singing a wonderful tune and didnt miss a beat. I do need to look over the brake pads...how do I take them out?

Congratulations! Thats awesome ;) Will have to look into attending a nasa event in my area.

Where can I find a list of these types of events in my area. I would really like to do something like this in the truck

Thanks for the link, I see they are coming to Road America which is the closest road course to me. Man that is a big course for first time out, we were hittin the 120's in the chargers at SRT Experience their, not shure I want that for my first truck experience, LOL

I am guessing that you were in what they call class 1 then and had an instructor with you?

No, I was in group 3. Passing is allowed generally in the straights with a hand wave by the driver being passed. Group 4 is all out racing, anywhere, anytime. This is my first event with NASA.

I've driven group 1 and 2 when I first started in my '03 Mustang Cobra. I then was allowed in group 3 when I had my Viper at PPIR (near colorado springs, CO). A co-worker of mine is an instructor for the Rocky Mountain NASA group, he vouched for the truck and my ability to drive it in group 3. I didnt really care which group I was in...I just wanted to have fun and learn the capabilities of the truck. I could probably get approved to go into group 4 but I'm not looking to possibly trade paint or increase the chance of an incident...esp in the corners so group 3 is great for me. Only dif between 3 and 4 is generally passing is allowed anywhere on the coarse (group 4) with passing in the straights with an obvious hand signal (sometimes not) in group 3. If your interested let me know. Not sure how the NASA group near you will handle the truck but they can talk to the rocky mountain region director if need be. He can vouch for the potential of the truck, not necessarily for the driver of it :)

NASA truck racing

Dave,
I got news for you, I've been racing trucks in NASA HPDE since I bought my new Lightning in 2001. I was in the top 10% here in SoCal beating all but the trailered race cars, was the only truck in any event I ran, and qualify for HPDE 4. I plan on trying my RC when I'm comfortable with its set-up.

Cool beans droptail. Maybe its just the rocky mountain region that either hasnt had any inquiries about trucks running with them or flat out doesnt/didnt allow them. I did read in one of the NASA pages that stated trucks were not allowed. Good to see your enjoying your truck on the road coarses as well. Its pretty incredible to see what these trucks can do with the stock suspension and tires as well as the weight. I'd be curious how a Lightning with an auto would do. Either way, its good to see the trucks out in the race field where they belong.

I'm starting to get a few inquiries about my truck since its still somewhat for sale and some have read my recent weekend encounters and accomplishments. Keep us posted on your thoughts about the truck when you do take it out!!

Really I don't think I can pull it off this year but am going to keep it in mind for nrxt year. Been busy all summer adding a garage on and doing the out side of the house. Got to spend all my time getting the outside done before snow flakes start hitting me in the a$$ :reddy:

Very cool pictures! Looks and sounds like you had a great time. Always fun to beat up on the sports cars...:D
