Well, I've drag raced and road raced my SRT Ram at least once this year...putting 120 miles of hard road racing on it this past weekend. With that said, I've been thinking about what I'd like to improve for future events of both types of racing. If I plan to keep the truck these relatively simple improvements should make it that much more fun to drive in all race applications. I've come up with a rather simple (and not terribly expensive) list of future mods:

1) wheels/tires - less weight is always better in this regard. Trouble is finding an all around set that will work. Also, some type of slick...especially the rear would help greatly in both road and drag race applications.

2) suspension - I'd like to lower the truck. This would lower the center of gravity a bit more stock and increase the grip. Add some aftermarket wheels and tires and its all that much better.

3) brakes/brake pads/brake fluid - the SRT brakes were great at the road coarse I went to but there was only one maybe two hard braking areas across the 2.1 mile track. If I were to run at a track that required more braking the results would obviously be a bit worse. Lighten the load on the brakes (removal of a few things inside the truck) and find a different wheel/tire combo would help as well.

4) hp/tq - my current hp/tq are more then sufficient on the road coarse I ran last weekend. Any more speed would require better brakes. For street/drag race applications more is better but overall is sufficient.

5) cooling - SRT brakes already have brake ducts in the front but perhaps could be made to be a bit bigger. As for the engine/supercharger...I never got close to 200 degrees (temps were pushing 90 on sunday) thanks mostly do DC Performance thermostat. The blower inlet system also pushes cooler air directly into the Paxton and likely helps keep the intercooler temps down.

6) tow/retrieval hook - this is a must for all 3 applications. Right now there is no way (that I know of) for a retrieval vehicle to safely push/pull the SRT Ram should it break down or crash in any type of race. Someone could make a pretty penny designing a tow hook for both the front and back (reg cab application). This is something I'm thinking about trying to solve.

7) gauges - its not easy to see the gauges while running a road coarse. Sometimes the steering wheel is in the way.

So, heres my list of future mods before race season next year:

1) shifter - mostly for drag race applications. Plenty of power/torque to somewhat limit the need of shifting in road race applications
2) suspension - lower the truck. Anyone use Boomers lowering kit on a reg cab and do any road racing with it? The stock suspension will lean to a point then stop. I'm suprised as to how well it does, I dont want to lose that if possible but would like to lower the center of gravity. I also like the look of the lowered trucks with his kit
3) brakes - whats available aftermarket-wise for both front and rear. Will they fit the stock rims/tires?
4) hp/tq - no changes expected at this time. More would be nice for drag/street applications.
5) cooling - adding Boomers larger cooler to help in preventing heat soak
6) safety - somehow add some 4 or 5 or whatever point harnesses. Would require a secure point to latch to such as a harness or roll bar which to my knowledge isnt easily achievable. I do have a fire extinguisher mounted to the passenger seat bolts during the road races (optional) and its easily removable for any other application.
7) gauges - a few more gauges would be nice but not sure how viewable they would be while keeping your eyes on the road and other vehicles.

I've also come across various setups for video camera mounts. Some are taking angle iron or something of the sort and adding some u-bolts. The u-bolts attach to the headrest posts on either one or both. Pretty inexpensive and effective for all applications. I plan to do this first since its rather simple and inexpensive.

Anyway, thought I'd through out my thoughts since I've recently done both types of racing this year. Anything I'm missing thats simple/practical and effective?

Dry sump/accusump system for the road racing? I think someone a while back had an oil related issue while road racing? :dontknow:

Good point. I'm pretty sure the SRT Ram has a deeper oil pickup line than the Viper. The dry sump/accusump wouldnt hurt and could only help. Not sure what the cost is to do it or what all is involved.

Dave T, I take that you are going to keep the truck now.:dontknow: I thought you wanted to sell it. Glad your enjoying your truck. :burnout: :burnout:

I would sell it if I could get a price for it that matches the mods that are on it. However, if I dont get the price I want I'd like to enhance its abilities for all applications.

It would be very difficult for me to get away from something with V10 power, its just awesome. The truck is a crowd pleaser and intimidator at/on the track (esp road coarse) so it has a nitch with spectators and racers as well. I'm not going to sell it just to sell it. I'd like to tweak it a bit more to better handle the road coarse but still be able to be street legal and respectable at the 1/4 mile tracks.

So, to answer your question I'm keeping it til I get a price I feel is right for what I've got :)

Yeah, I remember that post, cant remember his name. He was road racing and lost oil pressure. First dealer he took it to denied his warranty. Not sure what happened after that.

I only weight 110 pounds...oh you mean in the truck. I hate to pull the spare and tailgate for road racing since they help keep the rear planted. For drag racing I could see pulling them. I could pull the passenger seat pretty easy.

That was me. However it wasn't due to oil starvation. I had an issue with the vec 2 leaning it out and we all know what happens to #3 when that happens.

Anyway, I do have boomers lowering kit on my truck and road raced both with and without it. I can say that it makes a HUGE difference! Before the low job, I would pull just a tad over a G in a turn. After the low job, I pull 1.25 G's or more.

Nice post Dave ;)

I have about 400 miles of road course on the truck and understand your desire to take things to the next level.

The X-Metal drop kit helps out quite a bit in the handling. Its a good place to start but there is room to do alot more if you are going to do some serious road course runs. Believe using poly bushings could help, adjustable shocks, rear coil overs and perhaps a friendly camber kit that you can adjust without having to worry about getting an alignment everytime you go to the track.

In regards to the brakes, I was running 30 mins sessions on a 3 1/4 mile track with some heavy braking areas. You could feel the brake dust building up and modulating the pedal but never had any serious fade. Was actually out braking C5's at the end of each session. If we could lose 500 lbs then I wouldnt worry about having to do too much with the brakes.

Weight reduction...I ran without the spare and didnt have any problems with the ass end hanging out. The lowering kit really helps with this over the stock setup. Tailgate, lighter smaller rims, racing seats are the easy ones and would probably look at fiberglass body panels and bed for the budget racer.

Agree, a tow/retrieval hook is a must....would be one of the first mods to look at.

Yup, gauges arent that great at the track, especially when you are in a crowd. Would like a HUD display if possible.

Monster fan would be good.

Boomer sells the accusump setup for about $600, its the next best thing to a dry sump.

The GTS oil pan wont fit our trucks but doubt we could ever hit the G's in the corners where you might go into starvation.

Most of these mods are very practical. I think the suspension is going to be the biggest challenge on most costly considering what you need to do with rims and tires that work with the brakes. Of course if you could just go buy it and bolt it on, then it wouldnt be any fun :D

Man that's better than the Ferrari Enzo which will only pull 1.02 on the 200 ft slalom!!

Slalom is way diferent than a sweeper.

So it would seem we don't have the oil starvation issues talked about in the Viper? Better/deeper pan/pickup? Thats a relief. I'm looking into poly sway bar bushings to help the roll. I'm back at the track the 12th. Will try and run a video camera.

The oil pickup tube in the truck is different/better than the viper. When my motor blew the motor that I got (from an '03 Viper) had to have a custom oil pickup tube put in it since they're different. Not sure why they couldnt use my old one. Plus, the comp coupe oil pickup or pan wont fit our trucks like it will the Viper. Too bad, it would be nice if the trucks could get the same thing.

I know this is an "old" thread but with the spring and summer coming up and guys such as myself getting ready for some track days. Dave's info here is invaluable and thought it deserved a comeback tour.
