Please note, I take no credit for these weird Canadians...

The crew at Winding Road deserves a medal for finding this lost tale of one of the most spectacular car stunts ever attempted back in September of 1972. Nicknamed the "Super Jump", the stunt features Kenny Powers driving a rocket-powered Lincoln Continental up an 85-foot ramp attempting to jump the St. Lawrence river from Morrisburg, Ontario and landing one mile away on New York's Ogden Island. To do so, Powers' rocket-powered Lincoln Continental needed to reach a speed of 280 mph!

The tale of this mad adventure reads like an automotive soap opera worthy of daytime TV. Five years in the making, a cost of over $1 million and an unapproved last minute driver change add up to some compelling video, for sure. A Hollywood producer stepped in to finance the project in exchange for exclusive rights to the video, and we're glad he did.

Did Kenny Powers make it across the St. Lawrence River in his rocket-powered Lincoln Continental?

When that thing came apart it reminded me of those demolition derby toy cars that the parts used to blow off of when they hit each other LOL. I think Evel made it further with his jump.

I loved that part... You would think that they would at least tested it on the ground before they launched it off a ramp first to see if it could even it maximum velocity... 280 mph???? in a lincoln! :dontknow: :afraid: :stupid:

I wonder if they are still finding Lincoln parts out of the bottom of the river...

Fun ride while it lasted............ Good film too........ Stoopid presumtion of success...

All around shitty in the applied physics department....

Smash Up Derby (I think). I use to have them as a kid. They had those gyro's in them that you spun up with the "T" handle. Spent more time hunting for the parts than we did smashing them together. Man, That's going back, way back.

I think the angle of the dangle was a little off.....:):)
I think it was a combination of the little wings he put on the sides and the continental kit acting like an elevator on a plane. Sent him straight up. "This jump had been in the planning for four years". Uhh, maybe he should have taken a little more time :dontknow: . If only he hadn't painted it yellow. Everyone knows that yellow isn't fast enough :D .

How fast do you think he WAS going? Looked like 110-120.....whattya think?

No Idea but it was not fast enough.....reminded me of Knevils jump of the snake river.....what a bunch of BS...:(

I honestly think if he would of hit the suppoedly 280 mph, his Lincoln would of flew apart way before the jump...

Yup, that's it. Now I want one again! Actually, I never had one. My cousin did and I was always jealous as hell.

I can even remember some of the commercials theme song.

Crash, Bang, Smashem' Up
Putem' back again.

It's amazing how a few words can dredge up a childhood.
