The VEC is not a programmer....it tricks the computer by changing input data............the SCT tune actually reprograms the computer........both work great.....the SCT has more functions like checking for codes and removing them...............summary...VEC is great for the money and can improve performance as good as the SCT but it is getting dated.......for what the VEC is being priced lately it is a good deal..

I also am ignorant on electronics( among all of the other stuff.) Would my VIN have to be entered, and would it work on an 04?

The VEC does not require VIN to work but may need a different wiring harness for different years....but I do not know that for sure....if you are buying one used I would consult Sean at Roe racing before purchasing....he can advise if it will work plus provide the custom tuning cards based on your mods.......again I will say it is an excellent tuning tool....I would only change to the SCT if you are willing to pay more...

The VEC gets spliced into the stock harness. Sean can provide the automotive grade plugs that get spliced into the harness.

There are some that feel the VEC is dated. It certainly is more labor to install than a SCT. But as of right now it still has features the SCT does not. VEC can data log. SCT does not have data logging yet, but I understand it will. VEC can control a trigger line such as water meth or N20. From what I understand the SCT only holds one tune in memory and one in the PCM. I know that with PC software more programs can be loaded. The VEC however can have as many tunes as you can get cards for. So I will have my normal 92 octane, a low octane, race gas, and a race gas with N2O. I say all that to say, I am still a fan of the VEC if you have a wide variety of tunes needed or need the trigger. However if you just want a simple tune tool, SCT gets it done.

TN, thanks for watching my thread, and answering the questions for me. I appreciate it very much, it makes the selling experience so much easier when I don't have to even pay attention to the thread. The VEC is tentatively sold. I will confirm once payment is complete.

The SCT can hold 3 tunes and Sean Roe now has a trigger switch for meth that uses the SCT.

i really need to know if you have the harness with this and if so im just waitin on your paypal address

But the VEC can have unlimited # of tuning cards....and a tune can be installed in 5 seconds as compared to the SCT's 2-3 minute tuning procedure..........;)

How many tunes does the average person need? I would guess 2-3. One for the track and one for the street. The 3rd is the stock tune. Unless you route the cable and install the VEC in the cab then you have to get under the hood everytime. It takes hours to install a VEC, it takes seconds to plug up the SCT and it can clear CEL's and turn off the O2 sensors so there is no need for sims if you are catless. An extra 2 mins is not a big deal except for when you are on the dyno.

I did install the reader in the dash. I can change the tune in three seconds at a stop light...can't imagine why I would ever want to do that...

I have 0, 3, and 6 degrees of timing pulled.

Zero is the hot rod card. Three is the standard tune... minus 6 degrees of timing pulled is if you have to use gas less than 93 octane.

I also have a "Valet" card...limits the rpm to 2000.

And finally, I have a "No Start" card. Even with the key the engine cannot be started...it takes insertion of one of the three other cards to allow the truck to start. A thief will have to tow it off if he wants it!
