I was coming home today about a 20 min drive and I started hearing a scratchy/grindy kind of whine instead of the normal whine. It happens at about 50 mph and very light acceleration. If I get on the throttle a little heavy it seems to go back to normal or maybe the exhaust drowns it out. Has anybody experienced the same thing? What's wrong?[/B]

Why would the belt be slipping? I logged about 600 miles after the S/C install. If it were the belt, why does it seem to go away under heavier acceleration? Thanks for your feedback.

Only at that speed?

Can you recreate it when you are not moving...?

I tried accelerating while braking and could not reproduce it. It is most evident at that speed. I can hear it a little at slower speeds but it is not as pronounced. I hope it's not the S/C. I wonder if it is the heat shield vibrating up against the S/C?

Take the upper plenium off and check your lobes. check for any defects in the aluminum. Also inspect the case walls. If your good enough you could get the specs from Roe and record your lobe to lobe and lobe to case tolerances. Most of the time if a lobe hits something, it goes bad fast.

Do the visual inspection, to put your mind to rest.

You lost me there. Why would this be associated to the S/C whine?

If it comes on only under light acceleration it is probably not the supercharger. You really need to get to 3200 or 3300 rpm to get the SC to start to kick boost in. If you are hearing it at moderate or light acceleration, it sounds as if it is some sort of rotating hardware issue...check for loose pully, or pully with a bad bearing. You should also check the serpentine belt tension.

Also check for anything that might have come loose and is hanging close to anything that is moving when the engine is running. Even the power steering lines down next to the bottom of the radiator sometimes vibrate loose...when they do they can be rubbed by rotating parts.

Let me know what you find.

I had a resonating scratchy rattle. It was the heat deflector vibrating against the engine. I was able to adjust the mounting bolts and tighten her sown and all was well.

After reading the Viper Club thread, I'd better check the S/C oil as well. I guess I have some weekend wrenching. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. By the way, My heat shield seems to lay on the S/C nose(bracket). Is this normal. Maybe this is amplifying the whine or bearing noise.

You can view the oil level in the window on the front of the SC...should be at the half way mark...it is self contained...so I would have a tough time believing this would be the culprit... at a certain rpm range. I would check or remove the heat /air deflector...run it (after you check the oil window on the SC)... also check the belt. Sounds like resonance causing your issue at a certain rpm...:dontknow: never had the sound.

If you could tape/record the noise, that might help.
Give me a call at home if you like.

What kind of oil filter are you using?

I'm still at 2100 miles miles. I have not done the first oil change yet. I plan to do them every 3000 miles.

Bone thanks for the offer. I will look everything over today. I didn't make any sense to check things last night. If I can't figure it out today, I'll send you a PM and give you a call.

From my experiance with SC you have to adjust the belt pretty soon after install because it can strecth. The scratching sound you hear could be the belt jump off the cogs, if you let it keep going like that , you will ruin the belt. At idle or under a non load sitiuation the belt will not always slip, it usually only does it at certian under load RPM's. I have had it happen before and a simple belt adjustment will take care of it usually.
