You do have to hand it to the Russians though, they don't tiptoe around like we do when it comes to war. For better or for worse, they just bomb, and shell everything and everybody. That is a quick way to demorilize your opponent. Shock and awe?

Unfortunately these are the realities of war that we seem to have forgotten and now think that we can just snipe the bad guys of the world and leave all the kittens and flowers. Two days of bombing and Georgia has moved it's troops out of s. ossetia .............

In the early 80's, I was selected to be a member of one of the original SRT Counter Terrorist Assault Teams.

When discussing the different strategies in dealing with hostage situations, which was the most common (pre suicide bomber), tactic used by terrorists
to that time, the USSR employed the most effective solution.

Their policy was that if someone took hostages anywhere under their jurisdiction an assault team would enter and kill all the hostage takers period,
NO NEGOTIATION, NO SURRENDER, NO EXCEPTIONS.

That may be the reason the USSR was left alone for the most part by terrorists and explain the action they are now using.
