I know there are some members who live in Chicago so I need your help. My fiance and I will be working at Cook County Hospital for 1 month starting in January as part of our medical school education. We know nothing of the area, won't have a car so we'll be relying on walking or public transportation and are just looking for a good, safe area close to the hospital since we'll be working long hours. Thanks in advance.

I hear the accomodations at Cook County jail are rife with amenities:

Sorry you must leave our fair metropolis... SD rules.

I wish I could help you...but I have no idea...best you check with personnel at the hospital.

But once you get to Chicago...let me know...if you have a little time off, would love to have both of you out for a casual weekend in the country...our home is in Wadsworth north of Chicago, but we can come and get you and host you for a weekend. We have plenty of room, and would love to meet the two of you.

We will be on vacation until about the 10th of January...but let us know and we will get together...

Thank you very much for the offer Roy but unfortunately I will only be there long enough to help her move in and then I must return to Oakland. She is only there for a month and then comes to San Diego; we will have to take a raincheck on your offer; thank you again though.
Perhaps you could help me with some areas that would be close by to Cook County Hospital; I'm searching craigslist but have no idea what area the hospital is considered a part of. For example there is North, West and South Chicagoland.

Let me do some research...I'll get back here today or tomorrow.

You are no help at all Bob!

I have a feeling that the Mongols will not tolerate Outlaws in the south part of Chicago...

Just kidding...I do not want to start a feud...we have enough wars going on right now.

Just saying........... the clubhouses are usually in pretty bad areas of town, yet the neighborhoods directly around them are damned safe. No need to lock doors around there hehehe.

Eh, well around cook county no matter where you go if your close its not that great of an area. Believe me when I say, there are far, far worse locations in that dumpy city than there though on a positive note. She will be staying in a hotel for the month I'm assuming? There's a pretty decent Marriott Hotel in the area of the medical district there at:

625 S Ashland
Chicago, IL 60607
(312) 491-1234

They have shuttle service last time I remember and its pretty close, boarders the medical property down there. And get ready, its Chicago and a hotel so I'm sure its fu**ing overpriced food ect. But probably your best bet from what I can remember around that area. Ill try and think about it some more its been a while since I was down there for work.

You are kidding aren't you ?
Good AND safe,in Chicago ?? :dontknow:

walking ? handgun permits are almost impossible to get, so no reliable means of self-defense

You have a tough job ahead of you !

I guess we do have our work cut out for us. She can't afford a hotel for 30 days; its cheaper to find a sublet or temporary place to rent for the month but yeah, those are at least $600 and some as high as $1400 for a 1 bedroom. She won't have a car so trains, cabs, buses or walking will be her way of getting around unfortunately. Perhaps a can of bear spray for protection would make a great xmas gift this year :D:dontknow:

Just found some info on a nursing forum where they were talking about the same topic. They mentioned places that are serviced by the Blue Line or with L access, areas such as: Wicker Park, Bucktown, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Lincoln Square (45min away though). They also said anywhere from Lakeview through Chinatown. What are your opinions on these areas?

I wish we were closer, she could just move in with us...we have a vacant mother-in-law suite that would be perfect.

If she will not have a car...taxi's are the preferred mode of transportation in the city...and the expense is not huge.

I hope she has time for some of our great cultural opportunities...Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium, Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum and wonderful theater.

Bottom line for safety for her...downtown Chicago is very safe...ten block south of downtown is not.

Any of the northern suburbs are fine...Evanston, Wilmette, Highland Park...but super expensive and a long ride to and from work.

I have one other resource (a teacher in downtown Chicago) she has not gotten back to me yet...I will get an email for you...it would be good to have someone that your girlfriend could speak with prior to her arrival.
