Is there a way to see if the tuner is married to a vin or unlocked? This is an x2 9550 and the guy selling it doesn't know if it's unlocked (not sure how he acquired it in the first place) He does know that it was bought and had custom tunes for a Dakota 5.9 but that's about it. any way to tell?

Sure can. Scroll through the menu on sct and you'll find your answer. It'll tell you how many vins it has left as well. It'll say stock or aftermarket.

Remember, The 9550 is only a tool to upload a tune. After buying the used tune you will have to get a custom tune done and/or a "canned" tune for your vehicle. The tuner will hold 3 tunes . Tunes are not enterchangable . The tuner has no optional setting. In other words save some grief and get a new tuner for a vendor with your specific requirements already loaded. Well worth the extra expense!! ............

I figured if I could pick it up for $50 and save myself 150, it'd be worth it. Is spending the extra $ worth getting the x3?

Well..........you will spend $50 on the unit then $150 to have it unlocked(it will have to be sent to SCT for unlocking). Then contact a tuner for parameters for a canned tune. Probably $200. all in all still better to buy one only if you are doing mods. Not much gain on the Reg. Cab truck with just the tune. once you introduce modifications then you contact a tune vendor and He/she will customize your tune. There is a reason somebody is selling a $500 tuner for $50. The started out at $700! You can get them for $400.. I would steer clear! That tuner should have stayed with the truck it was bought for. ...................anybody buying a used truck should ask for the tuner with it.Chances are he has it but thinks he can sell it . ..............Just my thoughts

I agree with Slitherbeast. Getting a new one will be cheaper in the long run. I think there is a thread on here about the problems of buying a used tuner.

That's what my gut has been telling me from the get go, I just couldn't help but explore the possibility of saving some money. He says it's unlocked but he's not sure, that's why I was asking how to tell. I was hoping it may have been somebody that didn't know what they had and was just trying to get a few bucks out of it but that's usually not the case. I know you can't data log with the x2 and that's what was really driving me away from it in the first place-which probably isn't a big deal with the known reputation of torrie and Chris but I still would want them to look over some logs after installing a can tune just for the price of mind. I know I'm not going to see day/dark improvement with a custom tune on my RC but I hope it will at least be noticeable with the bolt ons I have (please tell me if I'm wasting my money). I'm new to all this tuning stuff so I'm learning as I go, with help from the forum of course...
