Secure Email?

There is a bunch of stuff out there from PGP that might work. Depends on how secure you need to be, short of a "Tempest room" your own fiber and a real good count of your chaining you will never be fully secure. Even then, personal opinion if you need secure email you also need a secure way to move the key.

Unless you need this standard email from a throwaway account is decent. If its bad guy related in any way then a deep packet inspection depending on the final destination is a given.

how does this deep packet inspection work?... i have someone hacking into my emails and changing the passwords and trying to lock me out its getting very old very quickly.. I have a Mac with 0 viruses so i dont see how they are gettin in to my email.. I know they might have had a key logger on my pc but i have since changed the passwords using the mac and they still get in...and i no longer use the pc

Its not on your side, if I had to take a guess its on the server side. A mac then PC's with a password change is uncommon unless you have someone sitting on your wifi/logger with a lot of time who is really pissed.

What I am getting at is unless you have someone who is really dedicated to making your life hell its on the server. Key loggers and the rest are time intensive. They/we don't go after single targets, without a good reason, mainly bulk lists/servers. Once you have a list of passwords its pretty easy to automate to the rest and make your life painful.

Short answer is your email provider is the one with the problem and it is leaking over to your life.

Off Topic

Deep Packet.

Its a techy term for actually looking into the message or data for specific tags. like "bomb" or "attack". Not just looking at where a message is coming from and going. This whole message is way toned down and not exactly correct but close enough for you to get a idea.

I have a women whom I slept with about a year ago .before I was married that is, The only problem is I don't know which one it is. She calls 5 to 10 times a day to me and my wifes phone each day, blocked I'd of course,, emails us daily from an ip that seams to be my own ip address and then gets into my email and tries to lock me out. It's really quite anoying , help

If she calls use your call back capability to determine the phone or phones she is calling from. Once you log these calls, you can have a restraining order placed on her and that can include your email. If she violates the restraining order, that's good because then it becomes an issue between her and the state attorney!

This is an interesting thread and I learned a lot just reading the posts!

Wow, that the first I have heard of a specific case like this. If she has access to you email through then a keylogger does make since or a number of other intrusions.

So lets think a bit, what I would do is find a scanner that looks at everything going in and out of your connection. Look for something that does not fit, there are some keylogger seach tools as well. Its going to be difficult if you has the same IP

Assuming she had access to your house after she was pissed off then look at the screws on the back of your keyboard if they look out of place then open up the keyboard and check the main line that feeds to the cable that connects to your computer, it will be a obvious patch job. A more common one would be inline, say a extra little dongle attached to the usb port or in line with your keyboard.

Third would be your wifi security, if you have it hard wire the machine for a few days, add a extremely strong password and see what happens.

A example of a strong password would be at least 8 numbers letters and Cases.

Such as GHT&7jut, it will be very very hard to pull that out of a logger. The bigger and longer the better, if he/she pulls it out very quickly then you have a majorly determined person on your hands

I admit if there is a question of who is doing this they would have to have some expertise or access to it, or and I mean this live very close to you to have the same IP if not spoofed.

I'm going to look for this scanner and see if there is anything strange going on, And ya I think she is spoofing my IP address and sending me emails what would look like from my own pc.

And the crazy part is she has never even seen my house, so no access what so ever,

And as you say about the hard wiring I will try this step today as well hook it up to the wall and put in a long diff password ie S#$Kkenw sorta deal.

Ill keep ya updated on the results.. and if you have any better ideas let me know..

thanks for the help

Are you looking for a corporate or personal solution?

A good corporate solution would be: Cisco Ironport

A good personal solution would be: PGP

WebRoot AntiVirus and Spyware has a really good keylogger scanner with it... this is what I use on my personal stuff...

I personally dont like: Symantec, and McAfee AV solutions.. they are too bulky...

Do they even have key loggers etc that would work for a MAC or does this only affect pc?... I the mac is vulnerable to this I will have to find a mac compatible scanner.

And I need something secure for the office but it only consists of 2 computers so would the Cisco be something worth while? ..

Macs are pretty good about keeping keyloggers and viruses out... but it looks like your stuck with Norton and McAfee for AV for those..

The Cisco would be overkill (and expensive --$50k+) for that small of an environment... I would go somelike like a Secure Computing UTM device -

http://www.mcafee.com/us/enterprise/products/network_security/utm_firewall.html

Even though McAfee bought them... the products are still really good. They make some smaller guys in the $400-700 range that you can get from CDW.

I really doubt its on the mac, there are very few available and not that easy to install.

If you have wifi, that's the most obvious attack point.

Shut the WiFi down. Hard wire your Mac to the router.

If the intrusion stops...that will tell you where the entry point is.

Thanks guys this mac is going hard wired as it just sits on the desk anyway.. hopefully this will help.. Will keep you updated if this continues.

will be checking out the cdw for the office as well..

what email service do you use? many services make you put in a backup email address as where to send password reset requests and stuff like that. make sure your email account's secondary email address is configured with something new just in case the intruder is reading your reset passwords from this other email account. also make sure your password reminder question and answer are as random as possible. don't put real guessable answers.
