A Eugene man was arrested by Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers last Sunday for reckless driving after he was stopped while operating his motorcycle northbound on Interstate 5 in the Eugene area at speeds over 100 mph.

Troopers discovered that the man was taking video using a camera set up on the motorcycle to film the speedometer, and after examining the digital camera video troopers got a big surprise when it showed the speedometer registering speeds up to 164 mph.

On April 13, 2008 at approximately 12:30 p.m. OSP Senior Trooper Jeff Leighty, who is presently serving as President of the Oregon State Police Officer's Association, was northbound on Interstate 5 north of Eugene near milepost 200 when he observed a motorcycle operated at a high rate of speed, estimated at 100 to 115 mph.

Senior Trooper Leighty notified OSP Northern Command Center dispatch of the recklessly driven motorcycle.

Two OSP troopers returning from a Salem area training assignment were southbound and set up near milepost 205. Troopers Tom Hunt and Clay Core spotted the red/black 2007 Honda CBR motorcycle and stopped it.

Upon contacting its operator, Ben Howard Kelley, age 37, from Eugene, the troopers noticed a digital camera was set up near the handlebars pointing forward.

Kelley was arrested for reckless driving and lodged in Lane County Jail pending a future appearance in Lane County Circuit Court.

The digital camera was seized as evidence and a search warrant was authorized to view its contents.

A review of the camera's video shows compelling images of the motorcycle being operated in a dangerous, reckless manner through the Interstate 5 Eugene / Springfield highway construction zone at a high rate of speed.

The motorcycle continued recklessly northbound with speeds documented up to 164 mph before troopers stopped it.

The Lane County District Attorney's Office has not given authorization for release of the video until the case has been adjudicated.

Okay, so that's not smart on a couple of counts. He should be arrested just for being dumb.:p He should have taken the next exit after passing the police car, and laid low.

If the police can positively ID him from the visual on him I believe that's enough anyway, regardless of an actual speed measurement or the video tape.

164 on a motorcycles speedo isnt quite 164 actual mph.. they usually read higher but still he was flying.

I had a camera mounted on the gas tank of my 600rr that you could see the speed. After I heard of a couple of these stories i raised the camara so the speedo didnt show.

Well, he's definately a dedicated video director because instead of ducking the law at his first chance he chose to finish filming. At least everyone has no doubt of his... speed accomplishment.
