I need some ideas on what you would put into your dream shop if you could build it from scratch. We just bought a piece of land earlier today to build a new building for our dealership. We sell and service farm equipment, so certain things like hoists wont be needed. I was told this morning that I can design a building for us, any ideas or links to somewhere where I can get more ideas?

My dream shop would have an "in ground" hoist, lots of counter space. Sand blast room, welding equipment, all that cool shit. but layout is key. ;)

A small room with a drink machine and pool table with nostalgia stuff on the wall:rock:

a pit for oil changes

A room for painting

another machine room

good size work area, with plenty of walk around space with lifts:rock:

congrats man. Will this be your 5th location or just a new building at one of your other locations? Will you still be heading up the Millet one?

Oh and make sure you get t-5 high bay florescent Fixtures for your main shop lights. They are the brightest and cheapest lights to run and we put them in all the buildings we do now. Same brightness as your typical 400 watt metal halide fixtures(ones you see in arenas) but they run at half the amperage and are instant start up, even when you shut them off and then want to turn them back on again.

up stairs cabaret!!!

mill, lathe, welder, band saw, hoist, ac/heat, clean room for engines, compressor, stereo, theres probably more.

An air compressor that is large enough for the shop. Preferrably a vane style.

Finish the floor, and do if before you move in. The reflected light is great for those working under a vehicle. It's also easier to keep clean, and a clean shop looks professional to your customers.

You can never have enough air and electrical outlets.

Damn, forgot where you are located. If it's not air conditioned, at least put in good fans on timers. Comfortable employees do a better job than those that are drowning in their own sweat.

Plan ahead. If there are common repairs that you do repeatly, set up an area that specializes in that repair. It will generally pay for itself by reducing the tack time for that job.

I guess that's all I can think of without knowing specifics on what you do.

And congratulations on expanding in this business climate. Most are just struggling to survive.:congrats:

Wow lots of good ideas here. I have no idea how to multipost so I will share some comments about what has been posted so far.

We are not expanding to a 5th store, this one will replace the current store that I am in. The location is kinda on the down low right now, but will not be too far from the current location.

I have no idea the overall size, probably around 40,000-50,000 square feet. This includes a showroom, parts room, shop, etc.

We wouldnt use a pit in our applications (tractors have lots of ground clearance) but I do want to have some type of a special bay that I can drive a tractor into and drain all the oils onto the floor and not try to catch it all in pails. We waste so much time collecting oil and cleaning messes. Some type of a grated floor with a sump to collect the oil and then pump outside into our normal containers for used oil.

We will have a washbay area and a welding bay area.

Trubilt, infloor heat for sure with infared heaters at the doors to make up the cold air coming in the doors (gets to be -40C here sometimes). We have infloor heat at one of the other shops and it cannot makeup for the cold air coming in the doors. It sucked working there because of that, it would take a few hours to heat up.

Airflow, I will use 2" PVC pipe for air lines. Stinker would that be enough? :D

Painting would be done in the washbay, I would make sure to have some type of fan system for fumes.

Exo, I will talk about the lights with you later. You would know that end of things for sure.

Silverback, a finished floor is the only way to do it. One of our other locations has a finished floor and it is super easy to clean. It hardly even gets dirty compared to the shop Im in now.

The sales and parts areas will be air conditioned.

I have some ideas for a layout, but Im sure that will change 100X before we build. Im excited, I have been waiting 3.5 years since I moved to this location for this to happen.

Stereo, forgot about that one. Speakers in the roof so you dont have to have a POS boombox screaming in one corner to reach the other side of the shop.

Keep the ideas coming.

Next time you are in town have a look at DB bobcats pit. They have a nice set up. This might change your mind.

Oh and I will be by your place friday evening if you are around to look at your basement. Not sure the time yet. Have to do a quick job after work then drop the family off in sherwood park, then I will be there. I will call you tomorrow evening cause I should know a little more.:D

Next time Im down if I have time Ill talk to Danny and see if I can check out his shop. They must have a pit for the gravel trucks?

Sounds good for Friday that will work out well.

Does anyone have any input on the transparent shop doors? They are great for letting in light but I have heard that they are bad for letting in heat and cold.
