Being a CPA I get updates from the Tennessee Dept of Revenue....TN does not have an income tax so revenue is raised mainly thru sales tax and other taxes including the "sin taxes"....this includes taxes on tobacco....starting July 1 the tax on cigarettes was increased by 20 cents per pack..

TN already has one of the highest cigarette taxes in the country.....this has resulted in TN residents living near the boarding states to buy their cigs outside of TN....In order to stop this bleeding TN will now seize your car if you come across the line with more than 20 packs of non TN taxed cigs..

You will be subject to arrest and charged with a felony if you have more than 25 packs...

I dont smoke...quit 22 yrs ago.....but I do not agree with this...it is unconstitutional. My brother (an attorney) said this will never hold up under appeal...

No state tax on payroll,no filing state taxes.
Can't be a bad place.
Lived in TX for 8 years kids went to new schools, new computers etc.TX has no state tax for those of you who mistakenly think states need it.
Moved to Ohio for better job and the city had a 1% income tax,no deductions, school was a 1%income tax state had state taxes etc and people were bitchin they needed more tax money but the schools, roads, etc were crap.$20k raise turned out to net about 5k so after one year took a 15k cut to move to Fl but am still 5k ahead and don't have the shit climate.
Never going back to some commie state tax collecting place.
Might move to Tn though cause I don't smoke no more either!

That was actually .42 cents a pack tax increase. I smoke, I buy em in Geurgia where buy all my gas also .10 to .15 cents a gallon less there.. I live 1 mi. from the state line.

You just have to love some of these states.

Here is one about the great state of Washington, aka. the Festering Shit Hole.

Vancouver Washington is just across the Columbia river from Portland Oregon. So, a lot of people from Washington cross over to Oregon to buy large ticket items to avoid the sales tax, as Oregon does not have a sales tax.

In fact there is a large mall just across the state line in Oregon. Well the Washington State Gestopo, I mean Police will cruise the parking lot looking for people with Washington plates that are loading up large, expensive items. They radio across to their Gestopo, damn, did it again. Sorry. Anyway, they radio to their police buddies in Washington the license number and description of the car. They stop the car as it goes into Washington and then write them a citation for the amount of what they feel the sales tax should be.

And yes, Washington state does have a law on the books that states you are to pay sales tax on items you buy out of state.

God I hate this state.

The Senate and House are considering upping the federal tax on a pack of cigarettes to 61 cents to fund more health care for children under the age of 18.

That is exactly what is bothering me...surveillance of regular citizens going about doing legal actions...legal until they cross into another state....Is that guy looking at magazines in the store a customer? or is he employed by the State's revenue agency to watch and make sure you dont buy legal goods and bring them across the line.....Hitler's Nazi's on surveillance: "as long as you have done nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about".

yeah to think i thought we lived in a "free" country yet i read about stuff like this all the time.

And I thought OHIO laws sucked.

Here in Ohio, we have to "declare" all items purchased out of state as well as on the internet so we can pay the proper state sales tax. Currently, it's set up on THE HONOR SYSTEM during state tax filing. LOL...

Internet... WHAT'S dat internet?!

Same here in TN.....a few years ago the state sent out individual sales tax returns with a letter explaining the law. They said that if you would volunteerly report and pay the sales tax they wouldnt prosecute....lot of people sent money because of this scare tactic...

That's really all the cigerette law is.... A scare tactic.

Michigan has had the same law for YEARS. I've never heard of anyone getting their car confiscated under the law. :dontknow:

We used to live about 15mins from the Indiana boarder. I used to go every week across the line to the smoke shop. (a pack of cigarettes is about $2.50 cheaper in IN than in MI) There are literally 10 shops at any given intersection when you cross over to IN.

John - If I were the chief of police in the town where that mall is (in OR), I would be all over those WA pigs like stink on shit..... 1. They are WAY out of their jurisdiction... and 2. They are potentially hurting the revenue for my fair city. ;)

Hey Jake, you need to keep in mind that most jurisdictional issues are now pretty much grey areas. They aren't making the arrests in Oregon, just doing an "investigation". They're probably sharing revenue from this with Oregon anyway, it's all about backroom deals and cashing in.

All these forfeiture statutes are bullshit. They aren't there to right some kind of wrong or even to punish the offenders. They are there so that our government can steal from us with no repercussions. It's just a bunch of strongarm robbery if you ask me. It's a sad day when law enforcement organizations are bragging about how much money they make. It's not supposed to be about a profit!
