"Red next to black is a friend of Jack; red next to yellow will kill a fellow."
"Red to yellow, kill a fellow. Red to black, venom lack."
"If red touches black, you're okay Jack; if red touches yellow, you're a dead fellow."
"Red next to black, poison I lack; red next to yellow, run away fellow."
"Red and black, friend of Jack; red and yellow kill a fellow."
"Red touches yellow, Not a nice fellow; if red touches black, good friend of jack."

Now with the black one, probably a water moccasin.... I stay away from those. If I were home, the shovel would have got it.

Like some have already said but not sure of just always remember this about a snake that looks anything like this with red/black/yellow rings.........
Red and yellow...kills a fellow
Red and black....friend in fact. (who the hell is Jack?)
This refers to the colors as they touch each other. Is red next to black? Yes it is, so it is a NON-VENOMOUS snake. If red touches yellow, use that shovel.

The saying sucks and is confusing , I can never remember how it goes...
Doesn't really matter ---what does matter is if you see a snake that looks like this just stay away and it will go away.....

There are several species of snake that are black there. Most are beneficial. If you suspect it's poisonous, have it removed.

Long gone by the time I got home. Most of what I have seen in the past 7 years living in this house have been water moccasins. There are many lakes (swaps) and drainage canals around. It of course ran towards the corner that my neighbor has a pond in that corner.
If I see it and it is a moccasin, it will be removed. Its head with my shovel.
Anything else for the most part is fine by me. Just as long as it doesnt get me, the wife, or the dogs. And the dogs better not bring it inside the house.

Think I might have a new pet...... he was back tonight (the milk snake), but by the time I got my camera out of the truck he was gone.
