Something Broke

Eric is helping me get my truck to the shop tomorrow afternoon. He is also hooking me up with a engine crate. THANKS ERIC.

Have I said how much I appreciate the folks on this site? Great people doing great things for each other.

My fab shop is going to take a gander on Friday to see if we can come up with a way to keep the stock fuel tank and spare and get my four link in. He has some ideas to check out. It is really cool that both shops are in the same building.

Well, it was bound to happen. I have thought for a while that something was gonna break. I have been skeptical of my truck since I pulled a 373 hp run on the dyno.

On Sunday, I got on it with some spirit from a 40 roll, and I heard a noise. When I got home I was still not sure if it was my imagination. After much deliberation, I am sure it is a knock. EED speculates that it could be a spun bearing. PBJ is more inclined to believe it is a bent push rod. I know the push rod is a minor repair, but I do not want to worry anymore. So, I will know soon enough what the real cause was.

I decided to move forward on my power plan. The truck is getting trailored to my local speed shop. The engine will get pulled and shipped to PBJ. Joe will do the build and give it back to my speed shop for the install. After install, I will fly Joe to the West Coast to do his magic.

In the mean time, my local fab shop will work on the 4-link. I am lucky in the fact the speed shop and the fab shop share a building. So I will use my down time wisely. I actually expect the fab work to take longer just because of waiting on parts like custom rims and axle assembly.

Oh well, it was rainy and wet around here anyway. I will miss my ride though.

Dale,

Does not sound good man!! Just let me know if your get a little truck sick and maybe I will come down there and let you drool over my truck and wish that you had yours!!! LOL j/k. If you need any help on anything, let me know. What speed shop did you take the truck to?

Hi David. The truck is at Max RPM in Bremerton. They are doing the engine removal and install. The build will be done by PBJ. The plan is to fly Joe here for the tune.

All the tunable vipers ought to get together and make his trip worth while.

what does he tune - vec, stage 2 pcm's, sct's ?

when's he going to be in bremerton ?
I know he does VEC. I am not sure what else can be tuned at end user level.
As for the time frame, it is all a guess from here. My engine will be 6 - 8 weeks. Another 2 weeks of transit time. And a week of install. So I am betting it will be late Feb or later.

so if you hadn't installed a sc, your engine would have still blown ?? come on, dale.........
To be fair, I likely have a bent push rod. From talking to Joe, that is not an unheard of thing for a stock engine to do. I am sure that my SC did not help the matter, but I am not convinced that it caused it either. Look at the number of SC out there. If this was directly related to SC, then there would be a lot more bent push rods. As it is, you see it sporadically.

however you want to spin this, dale......... engines pushed beyond their capabilities (ie. adding a sc, turbo, nos,...) on stock internals, leads to a shorten engine life....... i guess the point here is, if you're going to add forced induction - you'd better beef the internals so it will last.:D

depends on how far you push....we have FI motors on this board coming up to 20,000 miles without a hiccup....:dontknow:

No spin intended. How do you explain engine failure of stock engines with no mods? Stuff happens, and I do not think it fair to blame the latest mod just because. If all the FI guys were having this problem, then I would agree. But they are not, it seems to be a random problem not directly associated with FI.

Besides, most everyone thought I had a problem only getting 490 on the SC. I only had 373 without the SC. Maybe those were signs of the health of my engine at the start.

Either way, I am getting it fixed with the goal on not worrying about it again. And I will be adding power while I am at it.

It depends on how much of those miles were boosted too!

Randy, there is no changing what you believe.

My question to think about is how many bent push rods have happened on our engines? How many of those were low levels of FI? For me, I just do not see FI being the common denominator. Mine broke. The why is no longer important to me. I am getting it fixed. :)

It will be a bad to the bone build when it gets done. Suspension and axle upgrade, giant street radials, and a forged SC engine tuned by PBJ. I will be shooting for the front page on the time slip section.

Dale,

Keep moving forward.

Just remember it takes 3 times as long as you originally thought it would, and costs twice as much.......................................................;)

You should know:D :D :D It only took ya 3 years to get a heavy flywheel LOL;) ;) ;)

The knocking sound that I had a few weeks back turned out the be the flywheel hitting the back of the block. It was apparently warped and when the engine got up to temp it would begin to smack the back of the block.

Very interesting...how was that uncovered?
