Just read an article that said: Years ago, your transmission choices were usually a 5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic. Manual transmissions almost always achieved better mileage because a reasonably skilled driver could control engine revs through efficient shifting. But todays high-tech automatic transmissions are typically more competent & efficient than a driver using the combination of a clutch & stick shift. Few people learn how to properly drive a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. It's difficult for the average driver to squeeze the best possible mileage out of a car with a clutch, so the new auto's are better than the stick. What do you think is best for gas mileage, auto or stick?

Manual allows any descent driver to "pick' the gear that meets a particular circumstance.
I can't tell you how many times Im cruisin in neutral at 750 rpm's down hills or off highway exits saving fuel. Not to mention saving your brakes as downshifting aids in. Auto's tend to shift when they feel like it. How many times have you cruised up a hill and the tranny shifts like 3 times before it figures out the best gear. I find myself shifting the car by "peddling" the gas at the right time make the auto shift into the next gear. INHO

both. the new 6 and 8 speed autos that are coming out or already out are pretty damn efficient and strong. but prior to those types of autos, I'd say manual is your best bet.
