Hello, I was wondering if anyone of you might know what this is or have had the same problem. The past two days when I start up my 04 R/C, I have a strange whining sound that lasts for about 6-7 seconds. The noise starts out low and gets higher and faster and then just stops. The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like a sport bike, off in the distance, taking off from a stop and accelerating fast. From what I can tell the noise is coming from the engine compatment but I cannot pin-point the area. The first time I heard it was yesterday, after an oil change, all the trucks fluids have been checked and are normal. Any help would be appreciated.

What type oil filter did you use. Since it happened after and oil change that would be the first thing I would check. Could be the valve in the filter. Does it happen everytime or just after it has set for awhile?

Good call! Did you change oil viscosity from your last oil change? You might be hearing the oil being pumped through the oil filter. Also check your oil pressure at start up. When its cold, i run around 75 psi at start up. The oil pump might be makin noise too.

Mine has done this from day one....i believe it to be resonance
through the oil pump... my truck sits more than it starts...so it has to move some oil on start up.:dontknow: I have never had it give me problems after the initial start up.
At one time i was told that there was a check valve in the oem mopar oil filter...and thought by running any other filter would cause the sound... but i have not confirmed this.

:dito: :dito: If mine sits for more than a day or two then it makes the same noise.

There was a time when people with aftermarket oil filters had a noise just like that. BTW how much oil did you use?

I used approximatly 8 quarts of Mobil 1 10w30, and a Mobil 1 oil filter. I have noticed the noise two times now and both were when the engine was cold. I will have to check the oil pressure on start-up, I know it runs around 75 psi normally. This was the first oil change for the truck and I did change from the Mopar oil filter to the Mobil 1. So I guess that this could be the problem.

Thanks for the help,
Russell

Truck should use 8.5 quarts. But just use what ever gets it to the full line. Normal idle on a cold engine would be around 75 psi for the oil pressure. It should come done once the engine heats up.

Mine sits often. Maybe my truck is fugged up since it DOESN'T make the noise. . . ? :dontknow:

10/30? pretty sure right on ur oil cap it tell u to use 0/40 synthetic oil, also ur truck takes atleast 8.5 quarts to fill it up,some have used more but not less

Mine has made that same noise every cold start since the last oil change. It is resonance through the after market oil filters. I freaked out the first time I heard it since all I did was change the oil. Then after I found the source and heard everyone else experience the same thing, I relaxed and just live with it.

muzzy where in iowa are you:dontknow: im in CR, i hope i dont here anything when i do my change:confused:

Mine made the same noise when I swapped to a Fram filter. I then swapped back to the MOPAR stock filter and the noise went away.

Thanks for all of the input, I checked my belt and fluids again and they are fine. I still get the noise when I start the truck cold. I am sure it is the oil filter, when I change the oil next time I will put back a Mopar filter. I feel relieved that some of you have had the noise also and thank all of you for the help.
