on drag cars there are usually to post sticking out somewhere where they clamp something that looks like jumper cables... Is that just charging the battery?

My guess is those cars are not running an alternator (less drag on engine = Free HP) and to save weight. The posts are to hook a charger to the car between rounds to recharge the battery. And that wasn't a stupid question.

Some racers will turn the electric radiator fan on to cool the motor between races & use a charger to power it.
