I was going to put my new JMB powder coated t-stat housing and 170 t-stat and had some trouble with the bottom inside bolt. Then, it got too dark so I buttoned everything back up. Does any one have a trick to getting to that one? Or should I just find someone with smaller hands to help me?

I'm curious about this as well... and not to hijack your thread... but wtf is the difference between the 172 t-stat and the 170 t-stat?? and why are the prices all over the map?? I've seen prices in the $20's and prices in the $80's?? is there a difference?? Also, does changing the t-stat do anything without a new chip?? <shrug>

Some will probably laugh that I am giving advice on changing the T-stat housing, but that's ok.

I found the easiest way was with a Torx bit on a short (2") extension on the socket wrench. When you reach under the housing, there is a groove in the middle that opens to the left, I started by placing my finger in that groove while holding the extension and kind of sliding the bit down my finger, it should find the bolt. I know that is not the best explanation, but if you are in front of the truck, it will make sense. (I hope):dontknow:

The other option might be to get a mechanics mirror so that you can see from underneath where the bit is in relation to the bolt.

Not sure about the differences, except 2 degrees!:D:D

Changing the t-stat alone can help especially in hot weather.
It was explained to me that the stock PCM backs the timing off when the temperature rises above 205. This backing off can cost you upwards of 50-70 HP.

Scott you are right some people will laugh at you and the t-stat housing, but not me i would never laugh about someting like that.hahahahahaha....

Just did mine last weekend, when i had the housing and tstat out placed that bolt in the housing. kept my finger on it until i lined it up and i started it with two fingers. If you can take your girls bra off one handed then its no problem lol.

I did mine last week and for that bottom bolt I took the socket with an extension but no ratchet. Then I ripped a small piece off a paper towel and put it in the socket followed by the bolt. You want the paper towel to surround the bolt not stuffed in the socket. Then you can feel around down there without fear the bolt is gonna fall out of the socket. Just be sure to test the tightness of the bolt in the socket before hand. Once you have it in just throw the ratchet on and your good to go.
