Have any of you guys had any issues with the stock T56?

Today, I was driving down the highway... doing about 80 in 6th gear. I heard a pop/grind noise, then got A LOT of "shifter" noise. Not the normal annoying shifter noise... it's loud.:( I couldn't get it into 3rd gear at all. Didn't matter if the truck was running or not, clutch in or out. I was hoping that a shifter bolt had come loose, and it just wasn't lining up properly. I pulled the shifter, and everything looks normal. I removed and reinstalled the shifter a few times, but 3rd gear is still hit and miss and I'm locked of of reverse. Just drove it around the parking lot a few times, and I was getting a grinding noise in 1st:(

So what do you think? Could something be up with the tranny? I thought these things were REAL stout:dontknow: HELP!

Last year I had the 1-2 syncro go and destroyed the gears themselves. All I can think is something inside broke away and is jamming one of the shift forks stopping you from getting into gear you'll have to pull it apart.

Actually I was heading to the lake and when I got there and parked in the garage I couldn't get into 1st. So I was mad even more when I found out that the 2 gears I needed were a dealer item only.

quit driving it it a=can cause more damage the tranny needs to come out im positive!!!!!

You sure it's the tranny? Could it be something simple... f**ked up sifter? Wishful thinking:eek:

if you look in the diy i did a whole write up on tearing down the t-56. i had to tear it down so many times because i never tore a tranny apart so some of the problems i had like grinding 4th was my fault.

The main reason i tore the tranny apart was 1) bearing got hot and 2) the guide plate that is on the main shift rail broke in half which caused me to be locked out of reverse and also get stuck in some gears.

If you look at step 17 on my write up, the picture will show you the mainshaft. if you look at the cylindrical piece between 1/2 and 3/4 shift forks, this is the piece that on my trans broke. It lines up all the forks so if it breaks then the forks wont be lined up causing lock out.

The reason you might be locked out of reverse until you rebuild it is due to the fork for reverse has fallen out of the groove. Look at step 15 and you'll see the 5/6 fork and also the reverse fork.

Thanks. I don't have the time or the knowledge to do this myself. Any idea how much it'll cost to to have it rebuilt?

you could ship it out to http://www.tick-performance.com/tickshift/

parts aren't too bad depending on what is needed. I do recommended that if you have them rebuild it that you upgrade all shift fork pads from the plastic to the bronze(http://www.thegearbox.org/catalog/item/3838217/3508296.htm). Also upgrade from the stamped steel syncro keys to billet keys (http://www.thegearbox.org/catalog/item/3838217/3508384.htm)

Heads up, if the teeth for the syncro on the gears are worn down im sure they'll recommend you replace the gear because if those teeth are worn it can the shifter to pop out of gear and possibly hard to shift.

Expect to pay for new snap rings since they are not recommended to be used again once they are taken off.

The part i'm talking about that lines all the forks together i believe cost me about $26. Most websites don't list every part for the transmission but if you call they can get you the part you need.

Thanks man... I'll give them a call tomorrow. If it needs a rebuild, I'll have everything replaced.

Brad let me know if you want to pull it. Its really not hard at all and will save you $$$

Thanks bro:rock: Your help would be greatly appreciated.

there are manuals online if you decide to tear it down yourself. will save you money and if you do it yourself you'll have a better understanding of how the trans work.

The hardest part of the whole tranny is the 5/6 gear which needs to be pulled. only problem is getting a puller long enough to get it off.

WOW that would be great if we could work something out. I'll give you a call tomorrow Tony.

I really want to make sure that it is the tranny itself. Could it be anything else??

The only other thing left is the hydraulics. Which from the sound of it I dont think is involved here but can be checked out.

We do have a shop on base where you can rent a bay with a lift, and all the tools you could ever want for just a few bucks a day.

Alfredo, would you be willing to come help me with this? I'll cover your gas, food, hotel on base...:dontknow:
