taking flight

my first flight was today, and now i am on my way to becoming a licensed pilot.
i did the takeoff, flight, navigation... however i left the landing to the instructor, as i was a bit nervous about the most dangerous part.
and rightly so, we had 15-20mph winds all day. the cross wind was very bad.
it was very bumpy. however i didn't mind because to be honest i know now how bad it can be. it was hard to control, tippy, jumpy. the wind made it hell.

only went to 3000' and could not find my house from the sky, that's harder to do than i thought.

i loved it, and can't wait for my second.

I got my ticket when I was 17... such a blast. I haven't had the time to fly in years, and I miss it terribly. My instructor was new, I mean really new... I was his first student. When I was on my first flight, and he said "OK go ahead and land it" I almost pooped.

i came close to pooping out, right after we started the engine. i felt like saying "ok, that's enough let me out." it was not at all what i expected. actually it was far more cramped. i am not claustrophobic, but i don't like to be too close to people. and we were very close. everything at once, it was a huge mental challenge. when we got up in the air the left wing dipped, my sports car instincts kicked in and i tried to steer into the skid, AKA dipping the left wing more, sharply. lol his hand brought me back the other way quick. by the end of the hour i was feeling more comfortable but did not dare try with the cross winds.

I have never flown into NY but that terrain looks just like east TN....never thought of NY being that open and forested..

Congrats. I hope to do it one day. I turn 35 on Monday and am thinking of starting this year.
Down here in FL it is a bit more stressful. So many busy airports nearby. I have been up in plenty of small aircraft. Almost since birth. My dad flew and had all kinds of planes. Unfortunaly he passed away when I was 6. Most of my memorys of him are at the airport (Opa Locka in Miami), Getting a ride on the Goodyear Blimp, and flying up to the first Space Shuttle Launch and camping out under the wing of his King Air. :rock:

i do like that shirt, walmart, 8 bucks! i think solo starts at 20 hours... don't quote me. i am going to take my time doing it, should have it by my 28th birthday.

yeah i had to watch the gps, there was a big circle around ALB international.
if you go above 2000 ft around that circle you can to call air traffic control, something the instructor did not want to do.

speaking of instructor, he was very nice, and very young, about the same age as me. i was expecting it to be some grumpy old guy. this guy deserves to be an instructor, very nice person.

it will be a scooby doo shirt. they don't do the whole back, they do a small cutout of wings. and they have hundreds of small sets of wings on there wall.

i am going to have to work a few hours every two weeks into my budget. the price is not so bad,
90 per hour for the plane
20 per hour for fuel
50 per hour for the instructor

the next time i will go when there is less wind!

Congrats, it is definitely a very great feeling when you leave the bonds of the Earth...been doing this for years and also a rotary pilot....helos are not supposed to fly, but they do....never can relax in a helo, always doing something, no cruise control....good luck, and you will always know your limitations when you become a pilot, you have to stay current, and you know if you can or can't ...

once i retire at or around my goal of 35 i want to become a flight missionary, possibly flying missionaries to remote areas to help with social, medical, and spiritual needs.

and if the economy ever goes bust i want to fall back on it.

i am looking at a EZ for my first plane, it does everything i need, distance, altitude, expense to run, safety (someone tell that to john denver)

i would like to modify it to go super high... over 40,000 ft.

i love the view up there, adn its safer than sailing in today's world. i have never heard of pirates holding up a small plane.

fl300? i think it has to do with altitude, but remember this was my first flight ever, not my first solo.

Going above 2K would only put you in Class "C". Why would you not want to talk to either ATC or ALB TWR? I think it is a bad habit to get into. The more pratice the better you get. If the weather ever gets bad you don't want that to be the first time you try talking to ATC. I would make my students make all the radio calls. They struggle at first but that is the best way to learn. The only time I wouldn't is if the controler is very busy.
