Hey folks. I did a little experiment this past oil change. On the last few quarts I was putting in, I noticed that there was still a measure of oil left in each bottle. Just enough to register on the little side window.

I was curious, so I built a quick little rig and REALLY emptied 8 supposedly-empty bottles of oil. It's about 0.5 oz. per bottle that goes un-used. That's 4 oz. per oil change in our trucks, or about (1) quart per 7-8 oil changes.

Hey...this stuff ain't cheap, and with the amount our engines go through, every drop counts.

Just thought you'd want to know.

My dad used to do the same thing!

His setup consisted of a piece of aluminum flashing in the form of a shelf at an angle nailed on the garage wall. It would hold the quart of oil, spout down, and a coffee can underneath would catch the excess oil.

We used to laugh about it, but he saved quite a bit of oil that way! He fixed small engines as a hobby, so he would easily have enough to fill the crankcase of a push-mower in just a short period of time.

Den- That's my plan: Start running Mobil 1 in the riding mower and weed-whacker. :) It's not a huge amount of savings, but it's better than nothing.

And who knew that a Pepsi Big Slam cap had the same threads as a Mobil 1 bottle? LOL
