Actually, they do have a net in case the pilot cant for some reason hit one of the wires.

Not so much if they can't hit the wires but if:
1. The hook on the aircraft won't come down or
2. Loss of HYD psi for the arresting gear.
All apply for blue water ops only. You could launch a tanker to help a guy reach the beach if he is just short enough.

Wouldn't have done a tinkers damn in Scott's case. Engine wasn't running, so there was nothing to kill. The chute did deploy, but it didn't blossem.
