If you beat him, it's a crime. However, if there is a scuffle during a citizen's arrest, that is a defense to prosecution on your part (meaning you can beat an assault charge if that assault happened as a necessary part of the citizen's arrest). Just make sure that you have a witness that will testify that the guy attacked you first.

No offense but that's terrible advice.... if you want him arrested contact the police and provide proof that he stole the money... they'll gladly pick him up for you... maybe buy em some doughnuts for them to accidentally knock him in the head once for you
