I need some help with wiring a 220v outlet @ my house. I have procrastinated way too long, and it needs to be done :p

If there is someone who REALLY knows about circuit panels and such, maybe I can ask a few questions before I do it :eek:

What are you going to run, how far from the panel is it and how many amps does the product you are plugging in pull ie: welder, washer and dryer, lathe, mill? Beings you live in a residential area I assume it is single phase. All I need to know is the distance between the panel and your outlet and what you are plugging into it.:dontknow: PS if you are planning on adding stuff to your garage, the simple method would be to make a new run from the main panel and mount a sub panel (load center) in your garage then you can run many more circuits as your needs grow providing your main panel is big enough to handle it. How big is your main panel?. BTW, you will need a permit to cover your backside under the California disclosure laws for when you sell your house later.

You going to need to excuse my 'electrician' knowledge :D

I have 2 panel boxes:

1 at the beginning of my driveway which runs the house w/ a 125 in it...

that goes from aerial to underground, and runs down my driveway, into the garage where the 'main' panel (looks the same) is. The cool thing, is when I need to work on the main breaker in the garage, I just flip off the 125 breaker at the end of the driveway. Anyways, the one in the garage is the one I want to run a 220 off of. I need it to be about 30-40 amp's if possible, and I will mount the 220 plug (box) about 1 foot away from the panel. Just run the wiring out the side, and stick a plug next to it...so length isn't the issue.

Now inside the panel, there is 2 smaller slots available which are not being used. I'm not sure if I can just put 2 (1ea) 20 amp breakers (or higher) on there???

One thing to remember......When doing Elec work you need to pull a permit.....if the house burns down 3 owners later...you are still liable.....that is a simple job call a local electrician...Brody Pennell or the like....they get the permits site unseen......bada bing ....done...
