with the recent engine faliures it's just got me wondering if the engine in our trucks is a time bomb waiting to go, i don't like wondering if my engine is going to blow next time i decide to take it to the track to run it. if i had a lot of mods on it i would understand but for a bolt on truck to come apart like haulinasp's engine i feel there must be a MAJOR design flaw. i've always driven fords in the past and the only problem i ever had was the coil on plug ignition system. i have hated dodge since my parents bought our first one in 1996 brand new ram 1500 with a 318, mom traded it in about 7 months later because of all the problems and horrible fuel mileage(my srt gets close to or better than that truck did). however i wanted the biggest baddest truck out there and thats what i got, hands down the fastest truck you can buy and other than wondering if the engine is gonna blow i LOVE the truck. maybe i'm physicing myself out for no reason:dontknow: :dontknow: i really wish they were fully forged from the factory, as you would think someting that expensive would. sorry for the rant had to get it out there
 
There is no guarantee but if you look at it from a statisicial view point very few Viper engines have failed...most of the ones that did were using nitrious or FI...........and before someone says Joe bob was stock when he blew #3 I said MOST were modded........:marchmellow:
 
yeah maybe i should just save up and get the forged short block from stinker before i blow it up, maybe do a build similar to vipertruck2933 but with forged internals. then maybe i'd feel better(about it not coming apart anyway) i'd like to keep the truck for a long time(like untill the wheels fall off). i plan on buying a daily driver as soon as i get my new roof done on ym house that way the truck can sit at home and rest up for when i beat on it:D but for now i just try to ride my bike as much as i can
 
The one thing I would do is to dyno tune the truck on a safe tune, mail order tunes arent the best way to go,
now thats jsut my opinion, but a tune for a truck in NY want be the same for one incolorado;)

pistons?That top ring land does look wimpy.

I have some top tier engine builders looking at the

hi-res pic's now, but if need be I also have access to a failure analysis

laboratory which can determine pretty much positively what the fault is

but I would need the parts for them to examine.
 
justin i think you should be alright...and the guys right about the tune best mods you could do to ur truck now an get safe of mind an more power is a nice safe dyno tune and an a/f gauge....i think my failure was do to over tq'ing the screws on the shaft in the throttlebody......it was just luck of the draw....but then again we slaped that new piston in there an it ran fine for about 30 min......and it went boom again on number 5 and number 3....and now finding out that the crank was damaged....im pretty sure thats why the other 2 went... cause it was..out of ballance and il tell you my plan....im getting my truck back on the road...then am going to save for pistons an rods an in 6 months to a year be fully fordged again
 
IMO just putting forged pistons in an engine is false economics.

If you are going to push your engine and most of us do, spend the $10-12k to do the job right.

But the pistons are the weakest component, followed by the rods...
 
man save you some money after you get ur house squared away and talk to the guys at ART they'll help ya out

No nitrous on mine ever? Just a tune from Marty, Long tubes- cat back and a intake.........

Sounds pretty much like a stock/bolt on time bomb to me.:dontknow: :dontknow:
 
Anyone who even thinks I sprayed mine I still have the last 2 oil changes (mixed) in my oil change container- I'll be happy to send a sample out for testing.....

Like I said this engine that exploded had Mopar Long Tubes, Magna Flow Cat Back, Owner fabbed CAI- with NO ADDITIONAL HOLES for nozzles:p And a KRC/SCT tune..... I did run Pro Blend fuel additive every other tank .....;) That's all you will find in the analisis:(

Do you think the tune may have had something to do with it?:dontknow:
 
Honestly I do not know, I am working on getting the block on the new engine stand- I didnt trust the empty one I had-old and wobbly- so I picked up a new one, I just got the clutch and flywheel off, so I'll be raising it onto the stand soon as I pick up some longer bolts to slip through the stand plate to the back of the engine...

Then I can tear it down for examination.

i'd take it to ART from what i'v read and heard about the shop you should be good... i know i told you other wiase a few days ago on the phone but i'v since changed my mind... but heres the list

The reason I asked if anyone had tried replacing

just the pistons is that the conversation keeps returning to them as being

very likely the main culprit. Every enhancement designed to increase

durability comprises a percentage of the increase. Case in point; had I

spent approx; $1,500.00 on my 5.4 DOHC engine when it arrived new in the

crate, it would be 80+% as strong as the sky is the limit boys 5.4's.

When looking at Mr. Hennesey's comments,(long duration,at or near red line),

vs. my and probably others here ( short duration WOT, up to red line), the

requirements and solution may differ. Some of the best engine builders

gained their reputations by discovering and economically solving the weak

links in certain engine designs. IMHO the jury is still out on our engines

issue, but when we do pin point the cause, I would rather spend a few

thousand if it would get me 80+ or heck even 50+% of what spending

10k-12k+ would achieve.
