Hey guys... I have a small issue with my drivers front tire.

It could have been there since I got the truck, I am not sure. I am wondering if it is a minor thing or if I should replace it immediately.

No pics, truck not with me, but here is the info.

1. Sidewall area very close to tread on inside on drivers front tire.
2. Metal exposed (only rubber torn away) in two areas about 4-5 inches away from each other.
3. The size of each location is maybe between a dime and nickel. One of the two areas, the rubber is still attached but can flap over. I would have to actually tear it off with a little force to get it off.
4. The steel that is exposed looks completely untouched. No damage at all.
5. There is no bubble, no frayed metal, nothing.. Just exposed.

Question is, can I repair it, leave it alone, or change it immediately? the tire has 9k on it and is basically new, still has nubs on it.

My concern of course is a blow out... Like I said, could have been there since I got the truck and never noticed it. Only saw it while on the lift last week for its oil change.

Feedback please...

tire pressure is a very important deal. as for the tire change it now. metal exposed on a tire is not good. change it.

That sounds exactly like the damage that I found on mine. That is what kept me from running at NE Dragway with Dominick.

And, like you, I have no idea how long it has been there. I suspect it has been there a while. A friend of mine here took one look at it and said, "The reflectors in the middle of the road do that when you hit them just right!"
Not sure if that is possible, but I can't think of anything that I have hit that would have done that kind of wierd damage. :dontknow:

I don't think it can be repaired, I am leaving mine alone, and just keeping an eye on it. I have already been shopping new sneaks anyway.

I have not lost any tire pressure at all. If I had not seen it from underneath, I would never have even known about it. These Pirellis have a very this sidewall on them as it is. You really think I need to swap it out that fast?

I ran my rig through a car wash a while back. Mechanic said it might have been that, but your idea seems more plausible. The car washes have that track that is totally smooth. I just dont see it happeneing that way. Plus so many cars would come out with flats if it were bad enough.

If I change, do ineed to get 2 and swap in pairs? Such a waste, but maybe I could get another 22 rims and have a real spare instead of the stock. Anyone do that? Does it fit? Same overall height plus the aluminum is lighter than the steel stock spare :)

Most drive on lifts are Not Wide enough for our trucks :( found this out the hard way when the Stealership put mine on their lift. Cut the tires just like you discribed. Of course they deniy it:mad: then told us to leave thier facility
as they did not want our biz and if we did not they would have us arressted!!

Check lifts before putting your truck on it, the tire you save..............

The lift I was on is the type with the arms that swing out and rest on the frame. Could not have been that.

Yeah, the lift at my stealership is flat, no rails at all.

But the carwash thing.... you might actually have something there. Hmmm... I would buy that before the reflector actually.

I could get 2 new tires shipped for $400 by friday from tirerack.com. Would have to order tomorrow though. SHIT!!!! That was my JMB CAI $$$

I thought that first, but why wasnt the rear tire affected? The rear tire is usually the one getting pushed along the guide. Does not make sense.... I :dontknow:

Anyone have some Pirelli's cheap to sell? this is BS!!!

change it man, safety issue. you only need to change that one tire depending you if you want to change two of them. for the full size OEM spare it wont fit with the spare tire system we have now. need to have a big hub hole to fit the cable through to lift it into place.

as for the rack could be but i find it hard to belive and if it did happend at our dealership i would have no trouble taking care of that.

Good call on the OEM rim spare. Did not think of that. Kinda sucks though...

Def not the rack.. I could just change the one and be done with it I guess. $186 plus shipping from tire rack.com Doubt I will get a better price anywhere else.

I ALWAYS TAKE MY TRUCK TO THE CAR WASH... TIRES ARE OK... BUT THE FRONT DRIVER WHEEL IS THE ONE THAT GET MESSUP THE OTHER DAY... BE ALSO CAREFULL W THOSE CARWASHES WERE YOU HAVE TO DRIVE YOUR CAR INSIDE SOME TIMES THE TRACK PIPE IS NOT THAT SMUTH:(

You are right.... The one I go to is all hand washed and does have the track. It has the "Y" pipe as it enters to center the wheel. I was thinking maybe it was something sticking out along the way down. Maybe something got stuck in the track, etc... I will never know for sure.

I have had a quarter sized bubble in one of my sidewalls for over a year.... I'm thinking your damage is less dangerous than a bubble!

but you really should change it, maybe save it for a dragstrip only tire.

I have the GTG this weekend. Now I getting concerned about driving it so far. Nothing would ruin the day than a flat and running with the spare. Liek I said, it could have been there forever.

Why I am even questioning a potential saftey issue I dont know.. Maybe because I am thinking it is not really a saftey issue.

Just went and looked at mine, I don't actually have any wire showing at all...

I'm not too worried about it. My biggest concern was having it blow out at the track actually! I didn't want to foul the track, and didn't want to have it go while I was all out at 105!!!

Just looked at the pics again! Can you see the pollen?? My truck is covered in it right now!!
