how does a tire warrenty/prorating work

The actual value of the replacement tire less the amount of wear in 32nds.
You will need to know the tread depth of the new tire versus the tread depth of your tire in 32nds.

if you are planning on trying to get the prorate, first see if you also have the road hazzard replacement. if so, that should state that if the sidewall is damaged the tire or tires should be replaced at no costs except for the mounting of the new tires. atleast thats the way i did it at firestone.
